Holme + Sandringham: Seamless Cabled Knitwear Designs by Quail Studio in Mode at Rowan Alpaca Wool

This downloadable PDF pattern from Mode at Rowan, designed by Quail Studio, presents two distinct knitted garment designs — the Holme Cabled Sweater and the Sandringham — crafted in Alpaca Wool, a luxurious DK-weight yarn. Rated as advanced difficulty, these patterns are ideal for experienced knitters looking to challenge their skills with intricate cabling, precise shaping, and refined finishing techniques. The collection is described as seamless in construction, offering a polished, professional result with minimal seaming.

Holme Cabled Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Holme is a classically styled cabled sweater featuring a prominent cable panel running through the design. It is available in a wide range of sizes to fit chest measurements from 71–76 cm (28–30 in) up to 152–157 cm (60–62 in), with actual garment chest measurements ranging from 100 cm (39¼ in) to 181 cm (71¼ in). This generous size range makes the pattern highly inclusive and suitable for a broad spectrum of knitters and wearers.

Techniques Used

  • Cable knitting: The sweater features a defined 16-stitch cable panel measuring 5 cm in width, worked throughout the garment body. Cables are a traditional knitting technique that create twisted, rope-like textures by crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle.
  • Moss stitch: The main fabric of the sweater is worked in moss stitch (also known as seed stitch in some traditions), which alternates knit and purl stitches to create a subtly textured, non-curling fabric that provides an elegant contrast to the smooth cable panels.
  • Neckband construction: A circular needle is used to work the neckband, producing a neat, seamless finish around the collar.
  • Seamless or minimal-seam construction is referenced in the collection's design ethos, contributing to a cleaner finish and more comfortable wear.

Stitches Used

  • C4B (Cable 4 Back): Slip the next 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the back of the work, knit 2 stitches from the left needle, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a right-leaning cable twist.
  • C4F (Cable 4 Front): Slip the next 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the front of the work, knit 2 stitches from the left needle, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a left-leaning cable twist.
  • Moss stitch: An alternating knit and purl pattern that shifts by one stitch on each row, creating a pebbly, textured surface across the main body panels.
  • Knit and purl stitches form the foundation of all elements, including ribbing and structural shaping sections.

Materials

  • Yarn: Mode at Rowan Alpaca Wool, a DK-weight yarn sold in 50g balls. The sample garment is photographed in French 013. Quantities required range from 12 balls (smallest size) to 23 balls (largest size), reflecting the generous size range offered.
  • Needles: The pattern calls for two pairs of straight needles — 3.75mm (UK No. 9 / US 5) and 4mm (UK No. 8 / US 6) — as well as 3.75mm (US 5) circular needles measuring at least 40 cm in length for working the neckband.
  • Cable needle: Required for working the C4B and C4F cable crossings throughout the cable panel.
