What is Being Made

His & Hers Gloves is a downloadable knitting pattern designed to create a comfortable, fitted pair of gloves suitable for both men and women. The pattern offers seven size options ranging from Women's XS through Men's XL, accommodating hand circumferences from 17cm (6¾") up to 24cm (9½"). The design features an elastic rib pattern with negative ease built into each size to ensure a snug, comfortable fit that feels secure on the hand.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques to construct the gloves. The project uses knitting in the round with double-pointed needles, a method that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for glove construction. The pattern incorporates ribbed knit fabric throughout, which provides elasticity and recovery—essential properties for gloves that must stretch to fit the hand while maintaining their shape. Shaping techniques are employed to create the proper fit across different sizes, with negative ease strategically applied to enhance comfort and prevent the gloves from slipping during wear.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes classic knitting stitches appropriate for intermediate crafters. Key stitches include:

  • Knit (k) — the fundamental stitch forming the base of the ribbed pattern
  • Knit through back of loop (k1tbl) — a variation that creates a twisted stitch for textural interest and added structure
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) — a decrease stitch used for shaping the glove to fit the hand properly
  • Make 1 knit (m1k) — an increase stitch created by lifting the strand between stitches and knitting through the back of the loop
  • Make 1 purl (m1p) — a purl-based increase stitch used to add stitches while maintaining pattern continuity

The elastic rib pattern that defines these gloves is created through the strategic alternation of knit and purl stitches, producing the characteristic vertical columns of texture that provide both visual appeal and functional stretch.

Materials and Tools

The His & Hers Gloves pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, specifically 4-ply yarn construction. The recommended yarn is Patons Diploma Gold 4-ply, with the pictured example shown in shade #4301. A single 100g skein provides 368 meters (402 yards) of yarn, sufficient yardage to complete a pair of gloves across all size ranges.

For needles, the pattern requires one set of 2.5mm/US1½ double-pointed needles (dpns), or any comparable needles suitable for knitting in the round. Double-pointed needles are the traditional choice for circular knitting projects like gloves, allowing the crafter to work seamlessly without seams while maintaining even tension throughout the piece.
