What Is Being Made

The Hippogryph is a knitted stuffed toy designed by Phoenixknits. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fantastical creature combining features of a hippopotamus and a gryphon. The finished toy is constructed from multiple knitted components including a body, head, and legs that are assembled together to form a complete three-dimensional plush figure.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for an intermediate crafter. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base for most components. Increases are used strategically to shape pieces, such as the technique of knitting into the front and back of stitches (inc1) to expand stitch counts during construction. Decreases, specifically knit two together (k2tog), are incorporated to shape and taper sections of the toy. The pattern also uses color work, introducing different yarn colors within the same piece to create visual detail and definition between body parts.

Materials and Tools

The Hippogryph requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors: light grey, white, and a small amount of beige for hooves and beak detailing. 3mm needles are used for knitting with the DK yarn. Additional materials include faux fur in grey and white shades for added texture and dimension, small amounts of black yarn for claws, and yellow embroidery thread for eyes. The toy structure is reinforced with bamboo skewers or pipe cleaners to provide internal support and posability. Stuffing material fills the completed pieces, and a teasing brush or hook side of Velcro is included as optional tools. A small amount of Velcro is also incorporated into the construction.

Important Safety Note

Due to the inclusion of bamboo skewers or pipe cleaners as structural components, this toy is not suitable for young children and should only be given to older children or kept as a decorative piece.
