Product Description
The Highlander Set was inspired by my love of the Outlander series. Knowing this seems a bit overworked and that there are thousands of knits out there based on or for this series, I wanted to do something both simple and striking. While on the face of things, this pattern is just a squishy garter stitch double wrap cowl with matching cuffs, the join and styling make all the difference. Sure you have the option to just matress stitch the edges together and wrap the bulk of squish close to the neck, but I hope you will find the courage to use the lacing (I love a good leather lace) and cold shoulder styling pictured in the sample to elevate this simple knit to fashion statement.
Highlander Cowl and Cuffs by Fondle My Art Designs
Project Overview
The Highlander Cowl and Cuffs is a beginner-friendly knitting project that combines two coordinating accessories in one downloadable PDF pattern. This design allows crafters to create a matching set consisting of a cozy cowl neck warmer and a pair of fitted cuffs, perfect for layering during cooler seasons. The project is designed to be knit to fit, offering flexibility for different body sizes while maintaining a one-size construction approach.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces two complementary pieces: a cowl (a tube-shaped neck accessory) and cuffs (wrist warmers). Together, these items create a coordinated set that can be worn as a complete accessory ensemble. The cowl provides neck coverage and warmth, while the cuffs add insulation to the wrists.
Yarn and Materials
The Highlander Cowl and Cuffs pattern calls for 400 yards (366 meters) of super bulky weight yarn. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in the Oatmeal colorway, a popular choice for quick-knit projects due to its substantial fiber weight. Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and lacing for finishing details.
Knitting Needles and Gauge
This project uses US 13 needles (9 mm), which are appropriately sized for working with super bulky yarn. The gauge is 9 stitches and 12 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Stockinette stitch. Maintaining accurate gauge is important for achieving the correct fit, particularly for the cuffs which are designed to hug the wrists comfortably.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Highlander Cowl and Cuffs is worked primarily in Stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit rows and purl rows. This classic stitch creates a smooth, flat fabric with a polished appearance on the right side, making it an ideal choice for a beginner-level project. Stockinette stitch is straightforward to execute while producing professional-looking results.
The pattern incorporates lacing as a finishing technique, adding a decorative and functional element to the design. This detail likely provides both visual interest and adjustability to the pieces.
Difficulty Level and Project Scope
Rated as a beginner-level project, the Highlander Cowl and Cuffs is accessible to knitters who are new to the craft or those looking for a quick, straightforward make. The use of super bulky yarn means stitches are large and easy to work with, reducing the likelihood of dropped stitches and making progress visible quickly. The combination of simple stitch work and substantial yarn weight makes this an ideal pattern for building confidence in fundamental knitting skills.
Pattern Format
This design is available as a downloadable PDF pattern from Fondle My Art Designs, allowing immediate access to complete instructions for both the cowl and cuffs components.
