Herringbone Lace Sweater by Fiona Munro

What is Being Made

The Herringbone Lace Sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed by Fiona Munro from MunroSisters3. This sweater features a herringbone lace pattern and is available in five sizes ranging from X-Small to X-Large, with finished bust measurements of 32" (36", 40", 44", 48"). The design showcases a classic lace construction that creates visual texture and interest throughout the garment.

Techniques Used

The Herringbone Lace Sweater employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. The garment is constructed by working the front and back pieces separately rather than in the round, allowing for precise shaping and lace pattern placement. The herringbone lace stitch creates a distinctive diagonal texture characteristic of this traditional knitting pattern. Blocking is an essential finishing technique for this project, as indicated by the inclusion of pins in the materials list, helping to set the lace pattern and achieve the finished measurements.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure for this sweater is stockinette stitch, which serves as the foundation for the garment. The herringbone lace pattern is integrated throughout the design, creating decorative openwork sections. The pattern instructions are written for size X-Small with larger sizes provided in brackets, allowing knitters to easily scale the stitch counts and row counts to their desired finished size.

Materials

  • Yarn: Drops Alpaca (100% Alpaca, 4 ply sport weight), 50 grams per 167 meters (183 yards per ball). Yardage required: 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) balls in Yellow for sizes X-Small through X-Large respectively
  • Needles: 3.5mm (US size 4) in multiple formats including straight needles, double-pointed needles, and a 24" circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Additional Notions: Stitch holder, tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and pins for blocking the finished garment

Gauge

The target gauge for this project is 24 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements specified in the pattern, making gauge swatching a critical step before beginning the sweater.

Difficulty Level

This sweater is rated as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills in stockinette stitch, lace knitting techniques, and garment construction. The combination of lace patterning with multi-piece construction requires attention to detail and familiarity with reading knitting charts and managing multiple stitches.
