Herrentroyer in Schachenmayr Micro – Men's V-Neck Pullover Knitting Pattern (Free PDF Download)
This free downloadable PDF pattern from Schachenmayr provides complete instructions for knitting a classic men's V-neck pullover, known in German as a Herrentroyer. The design is worked in Schachenmayr original Micro yarn in a rich Smaragd (Emerald, colour 79) colourway and features a structured half-brioche stitch body paired with neat ribbed cuffs and hem. The pattern is sized for men's sizes 48/50 and 52/54, with instructions given for both sizes throughout.
What Is Being Made
The finished garment is a men's long-sleeved V-neck sweater with set-in sleeves, a deep V-shaped front neckline, and a metal zip closure. The total height of both the back and front pieces is 72 cm, making this a full-length torso garment suitable for everyday wear or smart-casual occasions. The zip fastening at the neckline is a practical detail that adds a contemporary edge to an otherwise traditional construction.
Garment Pieces and Construction
- Back piece (Rückenteil): Cast on 152/163 stitches using the smaller needles (3–4 mm) and work 7 cm of ribbing for the hem band, increasing one stitch at the beginning of the last wrong-side row to reach 153/163 stitches. Continue on larger needles (3.5–4.5 mm) in half-brioche stitch (Halbpatent) for the main body. After 36 cm (162 rows) from the top of the ribbing, begin armhole shaping by casting off stitches on both sides in a stepped sequence. Armhole depth is 27 cm (122 rows), after which shoulder shaping and simultaneous back neckline shaping are worked, casting off the central 35 stitches and decreasing on each side to create a neat rounded back neck.
- Front piece (Vorderteil): Worked identically to the back until the V-neck shaping begins. After 41 cm (184 rows) from the top of the ribbing, the central 5 stitches are cast off and the two shoulder sections — each spanning 64/69 stitches — are completed separately. The V-neck shaping uses a precise sequence of decreases: 4 times every 8th row and 6 times every 12th row, worked as slip-stitch decreases (passed-over stitches) to create clean, diagonal neckline edges on both the left and right shoulder sections. The overall height matches the back at 72 cm.
- Sleeves (Ärmel): Cast on 72 stitches on smaller needles and work 7 cm of ribbing, increasing one stitch at the beginning of the last wrong-side row to reach 73 stitches. Continue in half-brioche stitch on larger needles, shaping the sleeve by increasing one stitch on each side alternately every 4th and 6th row for 26 repetitions, then every 4th row a further 6 times, reaching a total of 137 stitches. After 36 cm (162 rows) from the ribbing, the sleeve cap (Armkugel) is shaped with a detailed sequence of cast-offs on both sides, including groups of 6, 4, 2 (repeated 18 times), and 4 stitches, finishing with the remaining 37 stitches cast off to complete the rounded cap.
Techniques Used
- Flat knitting worked in rows on straight or circular needles
- Ribbing (Bündchen Muster): a simple 1 knit, 1 purl rib used for all hem and cuff bands
- Half-brioche stitch (Halbpatent): a textured stitch pattern that creates a soft, slightly raised fabric with excellent drape — worked on the larger needle size throughout the body and sleeves
- Stepped cast-off shaping for armholes and sleeve caps, worked over multiple rows to create smooth curves
- Slip-stitch decreases (überzogen zusammenstricken) for
