Product Description
Hermione is a gorgeous pink hippo. She is all set for a twirl in her lovely pink tutu and her dancing slippers. On her head she has a lovely wreath of flowers which she may well eat if she gets a bit peckish. Hermione is a chubby hippo, just perfect for cuddling. She is 40cm high and takes quite a bit of fibre filling to give her the desired shape. If making for a very small child I would be inclined to embroider the eyes on instead of using safety ones and possibly forgo her floral head piece which is not stitched on. Take your time when making this delightful project and you will be just tickled pink with the result. This is not a beginner project but if you have made other amigurumi projects you won’t find Hermione to much of a challenge
Hermione the Hippo Crochet Toy Pattern by Jenny Occleshaw
What Is Being Made
Hermione the Hippo is a charming stuffed amigurumi toy designed by independent designer Jenny Occleshaw. This crochet creation features a chubby pink hippo standing 40cm tall, dressed in a pink tutu and dancing slippers. The finished toy includes a decorative floral wreath headpiece and is designed as a cuddly companion perfect for children and craft enthusiasts alike.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is a crochet amigurumi project, which involves creating three-dimensional stuffed toys using the fundamental amigurumi technique. Amigurumi is a Japanese craft method that uses single crochet stitches worked in tight, continuous rounds to form seamless, sculptural shapes. The pattern requires intermediate crochet skills and familiarity with previous amigurumi projects, making it suitable for crafters with some experience rather than complete beginners.
The designer recommends taking time with this project to achieve the best results. For safety considerations with very young children, the pattern notes that eyes can be embroidered rather than using safety eyes, and the floral headpiece can be omitted if desired, as it is not permanently stitched in place.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While the full stitch list is not detailed in the provided content, amigurumi construction typically relies heavily on single crochet stitches worked in continuous rounds. The pattern involves creating individual body parts—including the hippo's body, head, legs, arms, tutu, slippers, and floral wreath—which are then assembled together. Proper tension and consistent stitch work are essential for achieving the characteristic smooth, firm appearance of quality amigurumi toys.
Materials Required
This pattern calls for 8 ply cotton yarn in multiple shades:
- 2 × 50 gram balls of Pale Pink 8 ply Cotton
- 3 × 50 gram balls of Medium Pink 8 ply Cotton
- 1 × 50 gram ball of White 8 ply Cotton
- 1 × 50 gram ball of Bright Pink 8 ply Cotton
The pattern also requires two crochet hooks: a 2.5mm crochet hook and a 4.00mm crochet hook, allowing for different fabric densities in various sections of the toy. Additional materials needed include polyester fibre filling for stuffing—a substantial quantity is recommended to achieve Hermione's desired chubby shape and proper structure. Optional finishing materials include safety eyes or embroidery thread for the eyes, depending on the intended recipient.
Finished Dimensions
The completed Hermione the Hippo toy measures 40cm in height, making it a substantial and satisfying finished project that requires considerable yarn and filling materials.
