Product Description

My dear friend Hendren asked me to make something to replace his old store-bought hat as it neared the end of its life. He asked for something ribbed, but I wanted to make something a little more special than a plain ribbed hat. Hendren is a carpenter and fine art painter. He needed something he could wear in the studio, the wood shop, a day doing an install, or anywhere else his work takes him. I knew immediately that Lore was the perfect yarn for this project. The subtle highs and lows in each skein are beautifully displayed in the twisted stitches. The DK weight means it can it be worn fall through spring. And the Romney wool has all the right attributes a hard working craftsperson needs in an item for daily use.

Hendren Knit Hat by Julie Robinson

Project Overview

Hendren is a custom-designed knit hat created by independent designer Julie Robinson for a working craftsperson. This intermediate-level knitting project combines practical functionality with thoughtful design, featuring twisted stitches that showcase the subtle color variations in the yarn. The hat is suitable for year-round wear from fall through spring, making it an ideal everyday accessory for someone who works in multiple environments including a studio, woodshop, and installation sites.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a fitted knit hat with a one-size-fits-most adult construction. The finished hat has a circumference of 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) at the opening and stands 9 inches (23 cm) tall. The design emphasizes ribbed and twisted stitches that create visual texture while maintaining the structure needed for a hat that performs well during active work.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Hendren hat features 1x1 ribbing as a primary stitch pattern, which provides excellent stretch and recovery—essential qualities for a hat that needs to stay secure during various activities. The designer incorporated twisted stitches throughout the design to add visual interest and to beautifully highlight the natural color variations present in each skein of yarn. These twisted stitches create subtle highs and lows in the fabric texture, adding depth and sophistication beyond a simple ribbed construction.

Materials and Specifications

This knitting project requires 1 skein of Lore yarn in DK weight, a versatile yarn weight that provides enough warmth for cooler seasons while remaining breathable enough for transitional weather. The yarn is composed of Romney wool, selected specifically for its durability and performance characteristics suitable for daily wear by someone with an active lifestyle.

  • Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knit)
  • Fiber Content: Romney wool
  • Needle Size: US 4 (3.5 cm)
  • Gauge: 18 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm) in 1x1 rib on US 4 needles

Notions and Tools Required

In addition to yarn and needles, this pattern requires standard knitting notions for completion:

  • Waste yarn for provisional cast-on
  • Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills including basic cast-on methods, knit and purl stitches, and the ability to work twisted stitches. The one-size construction and straightforward stitch patterns make this project accessible to experienced beginners and intermediate knitters seeking a practical, wearable project.

Design Philosophy

The Hendren hat exemplifies thoughtful pattern design that balances aesthetic appeal with practical utility. By selecting Romney wool for its hardworking qualities and DK weight for its seasonal versatility, designer Julie Robinson created a hat that performs as well as it looks—perfect for someone whose daily life involves both creative pursuits and hands-on work.
