Hemera Sweater by Blage Crochet Design

What Is Being Made

The Hemera sweater is a simple, classic pullover design created by independent designer Blage Crochet Design. This beginner-friendly sweater features a basic silhouette worked primarily in stockinette stitch with a decorative lace panel positioned in the centre front for visual interest. The design is available in multiple sizes, making it accessible for various body measurements.

Construction Method and Approach

The Hemera sweater is constructed using a practical flat-knitting method, worked from the bottom up. The body is completed first in stockinette stitch before moving to sleeve construction. Rather than knitting sleeves separately and seaming them, stitches are picked up directly around the armhole openings, and the sleeves are then knitted from the top down toward the cuffs. This pick-up method creates clean, integrated armholes and reduces finishing work.

Stitches and Stitch Details

Primary Stitch: Stockinette stitch forms the foundation of the sweater body, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the front and textured reverse on the back.

Lace Panel: A lace panel is incorporated into the centre front of the sweater, adding an elegant decorative element that contrasts with the solid stockinette background.

Finished Edges: The hem, cuffs, and neckline all feature rolled edges, which are created naturally through the properties of stockinette stitch and provide a refined, polished finish without requiring ribbing or additional edging techniques.

Optional Picot Border: Crafters may choose to add a crochet picot border using a crochet hook, offering an alternative decorative edge finish.

Yarn and Materials

Yarn Weight: DK weight (light worsted), which is a versatile mid-weight yarn suitable for garments with good drape and structure.

Yarn Recommendation: The pattern specifies World of Wool White Polwarth DK in the colourway Undyed Y125. This yarn is 100% Polwarth wool, a natural fiber known for softness and breathability. The yardage is 328 yards (300 metres) per 3.5 ounces (100 grams) per skein. Depending on size, the sweater requires between 4 and 7 skeins.

Yarn Flexibility: Any DK weight or light worsted weight yarn may be substituted, allowing crafters to choose colours, fibres, and brands according to preference and availability.

Needles: The pattern calls for size 6 (4 mm) straight needles for flat sections and size 6 (4 mm) circular needles measuring 60 centimetres for working in the round or managing larger stitch counts.

Optional Supplies: A size 3.5 mm (US E/4) crochet hook is needed only if the crafter chooses to add a crochet picot border to the finished edges.

Skill Level and Accessibility

Rated as an easy, beginner-friendly pattern, the Hemera sweater is designed to be approachable for knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward stockinette stitch base, combined with the logical construction sequence, makes this an excellent project for building confidence in sweater knitting. The lace panel adds visual sophistication without requiring advanced techniques.
