Product Description

Materials: 3 different colors sock yarn: 600 yds. MC (copper), 400 yds. CC1 (grey blue), 300 yds. CC2 (cream)

Sample knit with Madelinetosh Tosh Sock: Golden Hickory, Stovepipe, & Milk

The shawl is knit in a crescent, from the bottom edge up, using lace in a cogwheel pattern at the bottom edge to represent the wheel which raises & lowers the gate, slip stitches in gray & amber to evoke the walls of the keep and short rows for the remainder of the shawl.

The shawl is then finished with a petite 2 color edging at the top and the entire pattern has a bit of a steampunk vibe going on. It is wide, capacious, and perfect for throwing on next time you go into battle - lol...

Be aware - the slip stitch portion of the pattern is charted only; there were too many repeats within repeats to lend themselves easily to written directions. Other sections have both charted & written directions.

Helm's Deep Slipstitch Wrap by Susan Pandorf

What Is Being Made

Helm's Deep is a slipstitch wrap designed by Susan Pandorf as part of the Two Towers Series from Sunflower Designs. This finished wrap measures 76 inches wide by 16 inches deep, making it a generous accessory suitable for layering or draping. The design draws inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, specifically the fortress valley of Helm's Deep from The Two Towers.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project features slipstitch construction as its primary technique. Slipstitching is a method where stitches are slipped rather than worked through, creating a distinctive textured appearance and allowing for elegant colorwork integration. The wrap employs a three-color design using different yarn weights and shades to build visual depth and complexity.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes slipstitch techniques throughout the construction. The specific stitch pattern works at a gauge of 7 stitches per 1 inch, which is typical for 4-ply yarn weight. The slipstitch method allows the designer to create intricate patterning while maintaining structural integrity across the full 76-inch width.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This project requires 3 different colors of sock yarn in 4-ply weight:

  • Main Color (MC): 600 yards in copper
  • Contrast Color 1 (CC1): 400 yards in grey blue
  • Contrast Color 2 (CC2): 300 yards in cream

The sample was knit using Madelinetosh Tosh Sock yarn in the colorways Golden Hickory (copper), Stovepipe (grey blue), and Milk (cream). A US Size 5 circular needle measuring 32 inches or larger is required, along with stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats across the wrap's width.
