Product Description

The soft lavender colour reminded Fiona Alice of the flowers starting to bloom in her friend’s Scottish garden during her stay in Edinburgh and inspired her to create the lovely Heather Breeze Shawl. The feather-like, lacy band in Silk Divine and the delicate details give it a romantic touch and make this crescent-shaped shawl so very special.

Heather Breeze was originally a part of The Edinburgh Connection, curated by Nature’s Luxury.

Heather Breeze Shawl by Fiona Alice

What is Being Made

The Heather Breeze Shawl is a triangular knitted shawl designed by Fiona Alice. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 155 cm / 61" wide with a deepest point of 50 cm / 19½" and a narrowest point of 23 cm / 9¼". The shawl is suitable for intermediate-level knitters and combines delicate lace-weight and DK-weight yarns to create an elegant, layered garment.

Construction Techniques

The Heather Breeze Shawl employs a multi-stage construction method that builds the shawl in distinct sections. The pattern begins with a lace border worked first using two strands of lace-weight yarn held together, which creates an intricate foundation. After completing the border, stitches are picked up along one side to transition into the main body of the shawl. The body is then shaped using short-row techniques, a method that creates depth and dimension by working back and forth across partial rows rather than complete rounds. Once the main body is complete, stitches are picked up again to create an additional edging. The shawl is finished with a crochet trim, adding a refined final detail to the edges.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern utilizes Stockinette Stitch as a primary stitch, with the gauge set at 17 stitches × 28 rows = 10 cm / 4" in this stitch. The lace border incorporates lace-weight construction techniques, though specific lace stitch patterns are referenced in the full PDF instructions. The combination of knitted sections with a crochet trim demonstrates versatility in stitch application across the finished piece.

Yarn and Materials

The Heather Breeze Shawl pattern calls for two distinct yarns:

  • Yarn A: 1 skein of Nature's Luxury Silk Divine in Lace weight (40% Silk, 60% Kid Mohair; 240m / 262yds per 20g), colourway Lavender Breath, or approximately 156 m / 171 yds of lace-weight silk mohair yarn
  • Yarn B: 2 skeins of Nature's Luxury On Stage in DK weight (50% Merino Wool, 30% Silk, 20% Baby Camel; 300m / 328yds per 100g), colourway Angel, or approximately 468 m / 512 yds of DK-weight yarn

The pattern requires a stitch marker and a darning needle for finishing. Knitters should select a needle size that achieves the specified gauge of 17 stitches × 28 rows per 10 cm / 4" in Stockinette Stitch after blocking, as proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of lace-weight yarn work, short-row shaping, stitch pickup techniques, and crochet finishing requires solid foundational skills and familiarity with multiple construction methods.
