Product Description

Originally did this on the Cindwood KK replacement loom of 42 pegs. But I did the video on a 40 peg loom in a 3/8" gauge. Have also included a formula to make this on any loom you want. I used more than one skein of Lions Brand Hometown USA in red but also made it with Caron Simply Soft and a Bernat Blanket Yarn. If you are using a chunky yarn you will likely need 2 skeins in order to complete this project. You only really need to know short row methods. Also if you have made socks or a 10 stitch blanket you can make this easily. Feel free to ask questions if you have them.

Heart Pillow by Scarlett Royale

What Is Being Made

The Heart Pillow is a decorative cushion project designed using loom knitting techniques. This intermediate-level pattern creates a finished pillow suitable for home décor, gifts, or personal crafting projects. The design combines loom-knitted fabric panels with stuffing to create a three-dimensional heart-shaped cushion.

Craft and Technique Overview

This project uses loom knitting rather than traditional needle knitting. Loom knitting is an accessible fiber arts technique that creates knitted fabric using a peg loom instead of handheld needles. The method involves wrapping yarn around pegs and manipulating loops to form stitches, making it an excellent alternative for crafters seeking a different approach to creating knitted textiles. This Heart Pillow pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, indicating it requires familiarity with basic loom knitting techniques but includes more complex stitch work and shaping methods.

Equipment and Tools Required

  • 40 Peg Loom: The primary tool for this project, providing the foundation for all stitchwork
  • Looming Hook: Used to manipulate yarn and loops during the knitting process
  • Tapestry Needle: Essential for seaming fabric pieces together and weaving in yarn ends
  • Polyfil Stuffing: Provides cushioning and shape to the finished pillow

Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for super chunky weight yarn that matches the specified gauge. Super chunky yarn creates quick, satisfying results and produces a substantial, textured fabric ideal for a decorative pillow. The yarn selection should be gauge-appropriate to ensure proper stitch definition and finished pillow dimensions.

Core Stitches and Techniques

The Heart Pillow pattern employs several fundamental loom knitting stitches and techniques:

  • E-Wrap Cast On (EW CO): The foundation technique for beginning the project. This cast-on method involves wrapping the working yarn around the back of each peg, bringing it to the front, and wrapping back to the rear, creating the initial loops that form the basis of all subsequent stitches.
  • Flat Knit (K): The primary stitch used throughout the pattern. This basic loom knitting stitch is executed by tossing the bottom loop over the top loop on each peg, creating the characteristic V-shaped stitches that form the fabric.
  • Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping the heart design. This technique involves tossing two loops over the top working strand, reducing the stitch count and creating the tapered edges necessary for the heart silhouette.
  • Slip (SL): A stitch manipulation technique where a loop is slipped from behind before working the next peg, used for specific shaping or texture effects within the pattern.
  • Wrap and Turn (WT): An advanced technique that creates directional changes in the knitting. The working yarn is wrapped around the next peg from back to front, then knitting proceeds in the opposite direction, enabling the curved shaping essential to the heart pillow form.
  • Pick Chain Up (PCH): A technique for adding stitches or incorporating previously worked chain sections back onto the loom, useful for construction and joining methods.
  • Bind Off (BO): The finishing technique that secures all stitches and completes the knitted fabric. The bind-off process involves knitting two pegs, transferring the second loop to the first peg, tossing the bottom loop over, and repeating this sequence across all remaining pegs until no stitches remain on the loom.

Construction Method

The pattern utilizes the 40-peg loom to create knitted fabric panels that are subsequently assembled into a three-dimensional pillow form. The heart shape is achieved through strategic use of decrease stitches (K2tog) and directional changes (Wrap and Turn), allowing crafters to form the distinctive curved indentation at the top of the heart. Once the knitted pieces are complete, they are seamed together using the tapestry needle, leaving an opening for stuffing. The pillow is then filled with polyfil to achieve the desired firmness and shape before the opening is closed.

Skill Development

Completing the Heart Pillow project develops intermediate loom knitting proficiency, particularly in shaping techniques and stitch manipulation. Crafters will gain
