Product Description

Loom knit this Head Scarf to keep your head and ears warm when the wind is howling. It's the perfect way to get from your car into the building without giving you "hat hair". (Yes, I designed this for my 81-year old mother who refuses to wear a hat and "mess up" her hair!) The Hat Scarf is loomed on the All-N-One loom. The i-cord tie is single-knit first and then you move right into double-knitting the scarf body. You then go back to single-knitting to finish off with the second i-cord tie. The pattern completely explains every step and includes diagrams and picture tutorials. The sample was knit using approximately 220 yards of Knit Picks Kelbourne Germantown 100% wool yarn [#4-worsted] in the Peacock colorway. So the Head Scarf is light-weight, but very warm. Because of the increases and decreases, the single- and double-knitting, this pattern is suitable for an intermediate loom knitter.

Head Scarf by Dayna Scoles Designs

Project Overview

The Head Scarf is an intermediate-level loom knit pattern designed by Dayna Scoles. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile head covering featuring a unique construction method that combines single-knit and double-knit sections. The design begins and ends with single-knit ties, each measuring 11 inches, while the central scarf body utilizes double-knit construction for added warmth and texture.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a head scarf with integrated tie sections. The scarf transitions from a single-knit tie on one end to a double-knit scarf body in the center, then back to a single-knit tie on the opposite end. This design allows the wearer to tie the scarf securely around the head while enjoying the comfort and drape of the double-knit center section.

Loom and Equipment

The Head Scarf is created using an All-N-One knitting loom configured specifically for this pattern. The loom is set to double-knit mode with a 1 cm spacer installed. The pattern works across 30 pairs of pegs on the loom, with each pair consisting of one peg on the front rail and one peg on the back rail. This dual-rail configuration is essential for achieving the double-knit sections of the design.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Head Scarf employs two primary knitting techniques:

  • Single-Knit Construction: Used for both 11-inch tie sections at the beginning and end of the pattern. Single knitting on a loom creates a simpler, more flexible fabric suitable for ties that need to wrap and secure around the head.
  • Double-Knit Construction: Applied to the central scarf body. Double knitting on a rake or knitting board creates a thicker, reversible fabric with two distinct sides. This technique involves working pegs on both the front and back rails of the loom simultaneously, producing a fabric with superior insulation and visual interest.

The pattern notes that maintaining uniform tension is crucial when double knitting. The recommended technique involves starting with the front board and knitting off the outer pegs on the left side while working toward the center. This methodical approach helps ensure consistent stitch quality throughout the double-knit sections.

Yarn and Materials

The Head Scarf pattern calls for 220 yards of worsted-weight yarn. The pattern specifically references Knit Picks Kelbourne Germantown, a 100% wool yarn in the Peacock colorway. Worsted-weight yarn (#4) is ideal for loom knitting projects, as it works efficiently on larger pegs and creates a fabric with good drape and durability. The wool fiber provides warmth, elasticity, and natural breathability, making it an excellent choice for a head scarf that will be worn close to the face.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for loom knitters who have progressed beyond basic single-knit projects. Success with this pattern requires familiarity with loom knitting fundamentals and, more importantly, a solid understanding of double-knit techniques. The pattern designer recommends that knitters new to double knitting review instructional resources, particularly the video tutorials and detailed instructions available on knittingboard.com under the "Learn" tab, to ensure they understand the basics of double knitting on a rake or knitting board before beginning this project.
