Hats in Stylecraft Special Super Chunky – Pattern 9590: Five Easy-Knit Designs Overview

Pattern 9590 from Stylecraft is a downloadable PDF offering five distinct hat designs all worked in Stylecraft Special XL Super Chunky yarn. Aimed at intermediate knitters, this collection covers a range of textures and construction techniques, making it an excellent resource for anyone looking to knit quick, satisfying accessories using super chunky weight yarn. Because Special XL works up so rapidly on large needles, even the more textured designs in this collection are achievable in a relatively short time.

Yarn and Materials

All five hats are knitted using Stylecraft Special XL, a super chunky weight yarn sold in 200g balls. Each hat requires just one 200g ball, making this a highly economical pattern collection. The designs are worked on 9mm knitting needles, which is standard for super chunky yarns and produces a dense, warm fabric ideal for cold-weather headwear. Some designs call for a main colour (MC) and a contrast colour (C), so two balls in different shades may be needed for those specific hats.

Colourways referenced directly in the pattern include:

  • Silver 1203 – used for the Ribbed Hat
  • Duck Egg 1820 – used as the Main Colour for the Moss Stitch Hat
  • Cream 3055 – used as the Contrast Colour for the Moss Stitch Hat

Size and Fit

The pattern is written as one size, designed to fit an average adult head. The Ribbed Hat and Moss Stitch Hat versions are sized to approximately 51 cm (20 in) width around the head, while the Textured, 2 Colour Ribbed, and Irish Moss Stitch Hat versions measure approximately 50 cm (19¾ in) width around the head. These measurements make the hats suitable for most adult wearers with a comfortable, snug fit.

The Five Hat Designs

1. Ribbed Hat

The Ribbed Hat is a classic, structured design worked entirely in a 1x1 rib stitch – alternating knit and purl stitches across every row. This technique creates a naturally stretchy, form-fitting fabric that hugs the head comfortably. The hat is cast on using the thumb method with 51 stitches on 9mm needles and worked in rib until the body measures 23 cm (9 inches). The crown shaping is achieved through a series of structured decrease rows, reducing the stitch count progressively to allow the top of the hat to gather neatly. The sample shown uses Silver 1203.

Key techniques and stitches for the Ribbed Hat:

  • Thumb cast-on method
  • 1x1 rib stitch (knit 1, purl 1 alternating)
  • k2tog decreases for crown shaping

2. Moss Stitch Hat

The Moss Stitch Hat introduces a two-colour design, combining a Main Colour and a Contrast Colour to create visual interest. Moss stitch – sometimes called seed stitch – is created by alternating knit and purl stitches and then reversing the sequence on the following row, so that knit stitches sit above purl stitches and vice versa. This produces a beautifully textured, pebbly surface that lies flat and does not curl at the edges. The combination of Duck Egg 1820 as the main colour and Cream 3055 as the contrast colour gives this hat a fresh, contemporary palette.

Key techniques and stitches for the Moss Stitch Hat:

  • Moss stitch (alternating knit and purl, offset each row)
  • Two
