Product Description
Step out in style with this glamourous beaded cowl, perfect for protecting your hair on a windy day or just for injecting some old-Hollywood sparkle into your outfit. Wonderfully flexible, it can be draped like a shawl, pulled up as a headscarf or worn double for neck warmth.
Gauge: One repeat of Chart B measures 8cm (3in) widthwise and 10cm (4in) lengthwise after blocking. Gauge is not critical.
Pattern includes charts and written instructions; Harlow can be worked from either. Beads are added with a crochet hook and the edges are scalloped by working a special dropped stitch. More information on both of these techniques is included in the pattern.
Harlow has been fully tech edited. I am very grateful to my wonderful tech editor Rachel Atkinson.
Harlow Cowl by Jemima Bicknell
What is Being Made
The Harlow Cowl is a glamorous beaded cowl designed for versatile styling and protection. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a luxurious accessory approximately 104cm (41 inches) in circumference and 45cm (17½ inches) from bottom edge to top. The finished cowl offers exceptional flexibility, allowing the wearer to drape it like a shawl, pull it up as a headscarf, or wear it double-layered for added neck warmth. Perfect for windy days or adding old-Hollywood sparkle to any outfit, this beaded cowl combines both function and fashion.
Techniques Used
The Harlow Cowl employs several advanced knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The garment is worked in the round from the bottom up using circular needles, ensuring seamless construction. The pattern incorporates charted lace motifs, with each row of the charts repeated 13 times around the circumference. Beading is integrated into the design using a crochet hook method, adding embellishment and visual interest to the finished piece. The construction method and stitch patterning create the flexible drape that allows for multiple styling options.
Stitches and Stitch Details
While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced through charted patterns (Charts B and additional charts), the Harlow Cowl utilizes lace stitches worked from written instructions and charts. The pattern notes indicate that gauge is not critical, making this project more forgiving for knitters new to lace work. One repeat of Chart B measures 8cm (3 inches) widthwise and 10cm (4 inches) lengthwise after blocking, providing a reference for the scale of the lace motifs throughout the cowl.
