Product Description

What’s this: These are my Hard Candy slippers, created for the Furls 2020 Blog Hop.

Why should I make these: Crochet slippers are super quick to make, and a great intro to crochet socks.

When will they get the most use: Anytime your feet feel a littly chilly.

Who is it for: Instructions are given for 3 sizes based on women’s shoe sizes, and adjustable to any size.

Where do I start: This pattern is rated Easy - you’ll need to know or be eager to learn the basic crochet stitches and colour changing. You will need 300g of DK weight yarn (200g of the main colour + under 50g of each of the 2 contrast colours – I used Whims Merino DK) and a 4.5mm hook. Other notions: a yarn needle and some stitch markers.

Feedback is always welcome and I hope to see your projects!

Hard Candy Crochet Slippers by ACCROchet

Project Overview

The Hard Candy Crochet Slippers are an intermediate-level crochet project designed to create comfortable, wearable footwear. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer ACCROchet provides instructions for crafting a pair of slippers featuring colorful contrast details reminiscent of hard candy styling. The slippers are available in three adjustable sizes to accommodate different foot widths.

What Is Being Made

These are crochet slippers designed as a finished garment for wearing around the home. The pattern includes construction for both the toe sections and the overall slipper structure, with sizing options for Small (Women's 6-7), Medium (Women's 8-9), and Large (Women's 10-11). The slippers feature a multi-color construction with a main color and contrasting accent colors that create a candy-inspired aesthetic.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Hard Candy Crochet Slippers employ fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The construction begins with a foundation chain and utilizes increases and decreases to shape the foot and create proper slipper fit. The pattern incorporates working in rounds rather than rows, which is a common technique for creating seamless, three-dimensional garments like slippers. Specific shaping techniques include working into the back loop only for certain sections, which creates textural definition and helps with slipper structure.

Stitches Used

  • Single Crochet (sc): The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, providing a tight, durable fabric suitable for footwear that will experience regular wear
  • Chain Stitch (ch): Used to create the foundation and foundation chains for beginning rounds
  • Back Loop Only (blo): A technique variation where stitches are worked through only the back loop of the previous row or round, creating visual texture and structural definition

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for Whims Merino by Furls Crochet in DK weight yarn. The yarn selection is important for achieving proper gauge and creating slippers with the intended drape and durability. For the complete project, you will need:

  • Main Color (Charcoal): 2 skeins of 100g (182 yards/166 meters each)
  • Contrast Color (Pink): 1 skein of 100g (182 yards/166 meters)
  • Contrast Color (Teal): 1 skein of 100g (182 yards/166 meters)

Tools and Notions

To complete this project, you will need a 4.5 mm crochet hook, which is the appropriate size for working with DK weight yarn and achieving the specified gauge. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and securing color changes, and stitch markers for tracking the beginning of rounds and marking important stitch positions throughout the construction process.

Gauge Information

The pattern specifies a gauge of 7.5 stitches and 8 rounds measured over 2 inches (5 centimeters) when working in pattern. Checking gauge before beginning is essential for ensuring your finished slippers will fit properly. If your gauge differs from the pattern specification, you should adjust your hook size accordingly—using a smaller hook if your gauge is too loose, or a larger hook if your gauge is too tight.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have completed basic projects and are comfortable with fundamental stitches and techniques. The intermediate classification suggests that while the pattern does not require advanced techniques, it does involve shaping, color changes, and the ability to follow more detailed instructions than a beginner project would require.

Pattern Notes

The pattern includes specific construction details such as working in the round without turning, which creates a seamless appearance. The toe section begins with a foundation chain of 11 stitches, increases to 20 stitches in the first round, and then to 24 stitches in the second round to create the proper shape for the foot opening. The use of contrasting colors in Pink and Teal against the Charcoal main color creates the hard candy visual effect that gives these slippers their distinctive name and appearance.
