Product Description

This pattern teaches you how to crochet the half double crochet (hdc) and use it to make a beautiful and useful washcloth or dishcloth. You can easily adjust the size to suit your preference. There is no multiple so simply chain the length you want then chain two more.

You will need roughly 5 yards of cotton or cotton blend yarn to make one washcloth so this is a great stashbuster if you have a lot of cotton yarn and no idea what to make.

Gauge isn't important. Simply play around with hook size until you find one that makes a fabric you like. I wanted one that had fairly good drape and wasn't too stiff. If you plan to use this for cleaning you may want a stiffer fabric, you may want to go down a hook size or two.

Half Double Crochet Washcloth by Amber Killian

What is Being Made

This pattern creates a practical and beautiful washcloth or dishcloth suitable for everyday kitchen and bathroom use. The finished piece measures approximately 12 inches by 13 inches, though the design is fully customizable to your preferred dimensions. The straightforward construction makes it an ideal project for those new to crochet, while the finished fabric remains durable and functional for repeated washing and use.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is a crochet project designed at the beginner difficulty level. The pattern focuses on teaching and practicing the half double crochet (hdc) stitch, one of the fundamental crochet stitches that creates a fabric with moderate drape and density. By working exclusively with this single stitch throughout the entire project, beginners can build confidence and muscle memory while creating a useful finished item. The pattern emphasizes that gauge and tension are not critical for this project, allowing new crocheters to focus on stitch consistency rather than precise measurements.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

  • ch (chain): The foundation stitch used to create the initial base of the washcloth
  • hdc (half double crochet): The primary stitch used throughout the entire pattern to build the fabric

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Approximately 5 yards of cotton or cotton blend yarn in aran or worsted weight. The pattern specifically references Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran as a suitable option, though any comparable yarn weight will work
  • Hook: 5.5 mm (size I) crochet hook
  • Additional Tools: A tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and stitch markers (optional, for tracking rows if desired)

Pattern Customization

The design features a simple, flexible construction with no stitch multiples required. To adjust the size, you simply chain the width you desire, then add 2 additional chains. This straightforward approach allows crafters to easily create washcloths in various dimensions to suit their specific needs, whether making a standard size or a larger or smaller variation.
