Product Description
I love granny square projects! This doily was designed to match the shape of a rectangle wax warmer, but the beauty of this doily is that it can easily be made larger or smaller by adding or substracting granny squares. You'll need some worsted weight yarn - I used Lily Sugar n Cream because it's durable, and machine washes and dries well. If you intend on using with warm or moist items, I recommend the cotton (or wool), otherwise any fiber works. This doily took me just over an hour to work up.
Gwendolyn Doily Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Gwendolyn Doily is a crocheted table setting accessory designed by Alexandra EyeLoveKnots. This doily features a classic granny square construction and measures 6.5 inches tall by 9 inches wide, making it an ideal accent piece for table décor, place settings, or decorative displays.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is an intermediate-level crochet project that teaches the foundational technique of constructing a granny square doily. The pattern demonstrates how to build a structured, geometric doily using traditional granny square methods. The completed project requires just over one hour of work time, making it an accessible intermediate project for crafters looking to expand their skills beyond beginner patterns.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (SC) – foundational stitch for creating tight, dense fabric
- Double Crochet (DC) – used to build height and structure within the granny square pattern
- Granny Square – the primary construction technique that forms the overall structure of the doily
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: 58 yards of worsted weight yarn. The designer used Lily Sugar n Cream in Hot Blue, a cotton yarn choice recommended for durability and machine-washable properties. The pattern notes that cotton is ideal for doilies intended for use with warm or moist items, though any fiber works for purely decorative applications. Wool is also recommended as an alternative for items exposed to moisture.
Tools: H8/5mm crochet hook, tapestry needle for finishing, and optional jewelry pliers (recommended for weaving in ends with cotton yarn, which can be tough on fingers).
Gauge and Finished Measurements
The gauge for this pattern is 1 granny square = 2.75 inches. The finished doily measures 6.5 inches in height by 9 inches in width, creating a rectangular proportion suitable for table settings.
