Product Description
Halloween is one of my favourite seasons, I love the dressing up and the guilt free lolly eating, and I love decorating the house! In Australia, Halloween happens during spring, but we still have pumpkins for carving and it's such a fun activity. I thought I'd switch things up a bit and make a gourd instead of a pumpkin. If you're interested in unusual Halloween lantern vegetables, I also have a free pattern for a Halloween Turnip that I released last year (and there is a cool story to go with it!).

Gwen the Gourd Crochet Toy Pattern
What Is Being Made
Gwen the Gourd is a crocheted amigurumi-style toy designed by Emma McFarlane. This Halloween-themed project features a gourd character, offering a creative alternative to traditional pumpkin decorations. The pattern is ideal for crafters looking to create festive seasonal décor or soft toys with a unique vegetable twist.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the crochet technique to construct a three-dimensional stuffed toy. Crochet is worked in continuous rounds using a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn. The amigurumi method—a Japanese technique for crocheting small stuffed animals and objects—is employed to build the gourd shape with shaping and increases to form dimensional curves.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern, the construction relies on fundamental crochet stitches commonly used in amigurumi projects. These typically include single crochet for tight, dense fabric that holds stuffing securely, along with increases and decreases to shape the rounded gourd form.
Materials Required
- Yarn: DK weight (8ply) yarn in orange and brown colorways
- Hook: Crochet hook appropriate for DK yarn (typically size 3.5–4mm)
- Additional supplies: Fiberfill stuffing, yarn needle for finishing, and stitch markers
Difficulty Level
Rated as beginner friendly, this pattern is accessible to new crocheters while remaining enjoyable for experienced makers. The straightforward construction makes it an excellent introduction to amigurumi techniques.
