Gulls & Waves Hat by Waterwoman Knits

Project Overview

The Gulls & Waves Hat is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Erin Waterman of Waterwoman Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat with a headband circumference of 18 inches (45.72 cm) and a height of 8.5 inches (22 cm), with adjustments provided for a larger 22-inch (55.9 cm) circumference option. The design incorporates colorwork elements featuring gulls and waves, making it a visually engaging project suitable for knitters with some experience in stranded colorwork and hat construction.

Techniques & Construction Methods

This hat is constructed using top-down circular knitting, a popular method for creating seamless headwear. The pattern begins with ribbing worked on smaller needles to create a snug, elastic cuff, then transitions to larger needles for the main body. The colorwork pattern representing gulls and waves is worked in the round using stranded knitting (also known as Fair Isle), a technique where two colors are carried simultaneously and floated across the back of the work to create the design on the front. The crown is shaped using strategic decreases that are distributed evenly around the hat, transitioning from circular needles to either magic loop method or double-pointed needles (DPNs) as the stitch count diminishes.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing: The cuff employs a ribbed stitch pattern (likely knit and purl combinations) worked over 10 or more rounds to create stretch and structure at the hat's base
  • Stockinette Stitch: The main body of the hat is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth canvas for the colorwork pattern
  • Stranded Colorwork: The gulls and waves design is created by carrying two colors of yarn and switching between them to form the pattern
  • Crown Decreases: Decreases are worked in a structured manner to shape the crown, tapering the hat to a finished point

Yarn & Materials

The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors. The primary color (C1) is specified as KnitPicks Preciosa Tonal, a 100% Merino wool yarn offering 273 yards per 100 grams. Approximately 110 yards of C1 are needed for the 22-inch sample. The secondary color (C2) should be any high-contrast worsted weight wool, with approximately 100 yards required for the larger size. The use of high-contrast colors ensures the gulls and waves motif remains visually distinct and striking.

Needles required include US 5 (3.75 mm) 16-inch circular needles for the ribbing section, where the smaller needle size creates the proper gauge for an elastic cuff. US 8 (5 mm) 16-inch circular needles are used for the remainder of the hat body. For the crown decreases, knitters may use either US 8 (5 mm) circular needles at least 32 inches long worked using the magic loop method, or traditional double-pointed needles (DPNs) of the same size. Additional notions include stitch markers (five for the smaller size, six for the larger size), one unique marker to denote the beginning of round (BR), and a tapestry or darning needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge & Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches by 32 rounds over 4 inches in the ribbing section when worked on smaller needles and blocked. The main body gauge is 22 stitches by 25 rounds over 4 inches. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. The pattern provides flexibility for customization: knitters can increase the hat's height by adding additional knit rounds before the crown decreases begin and/or by working the ribbing section for more than 10 rounds, allowing for personalization based on individual head proportions and style preferences.
