Gulal Hat by Mary Renji
What is Being Made
The Gulal Hat is an intermediate-level crochet hat designed by Mary Renji in three sizes: Small (20"/51cm), Medium (22"/56cm), and Large (24"/61cm). The finished hat features a height range of 8.3" to 9" (21-23cm) depending on size. This downloadable PDF pattern provides complete instructions for creating a structured, fitted hat suitable for various head sizes.
Techniques Used
The Gulal Hat employs several fundamental crochet techniques to achieve its construction. The pattern begins with a ribbed cuff created through a foundation chain and post-stitch work, which is then rotated 90 degrees to transition into the main body of the hat. This directional construction method allows for a seamless integration between the ribbing and body sections. The pattern utilizes both front and back post stitches to create textured ribbing, and incorporates decreasing techniques through combined stitches to shape the crown of the hat.
Stitches Used
The Gulal Hat pattern uses the following crochet stitches:
- Chain (Ch) – foundation and turning stitches
- Single Crochet (Sc) – used for transitioning between ribbing and body sections
- Double Crochet (DC) – primary stitch for the hat body, worked to a gauge of 18 stitches × 8 rows over 10cm/4"
- Front Post Double Crochet (Fpdc) – creates textured ribbing and shaping
- Back Post Double Crochet (Bpdc) – contributes to ribbed texture
- Front Post Double Crochet 2 Together (Fpdc2tog) – a decrease stitch used for crown shaping
- Slip Stitch (Sl st) – joins rounds and transitions between sections
Materials and Tools
The Gulal Hat pattern recommends Willow and Lark Ramble yarn at 100 grams, or any DK weight yarn as a suitable substitute. A 4.5mm crochet hook (US size 7) is required to achieve the specified gauge of 18 stitches and 8 rows of double crochet over 10 centimeters or 4 inches. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends and an optional pompom for finishing embellishment. The DK weight yarn provides a medium thickness ideal for creating a structured hat with good stitch definition while maintaining breathability.
