Product Description
Gudena Pouches Knitting Pattern – Regia 4 Ply (R0100)
The Gudena Pouches is a free, downloadable PDF knitting pattern by the REGIA Designteam, originally published in July 2012 and released under reference R0100. This beginner-friendly pattern guides knitters through creating a set of three differently sized knitted pouches, each worked in a classic, structured style that is both practical and stylish. The pattern is rated Easy, making it an ideal project for those who are new to knitting or looking for a relaxed, satisfying make.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces three knitted pouches in three distinct sizes, each worked in a different colourway of REGIA 4-ply yarn. The finished pouches are:
- Small pouch in natur (Col 01992): approximately 4¾" x 4¾" (12 x 12 cm) with a height of around 6¾" (17 cm)
- Medium pouch in hell-kamel meliert (Col 00017): approximately 6" x 6" (15 x 15 cm) with a height of around 8" (20.5 cm)
- Large pouch in anthrazit meliert (Col 00522): approximately 7" x 7" (18 x 18 cm) with a height of around 9½" (24 cm)
These pouches make excellent storage accessories, gift bags, or everyday carry pouches. The three-size format means knitters can choose the dimensions that best suit their needs, or knit all three as a coordinating set.
Techniques Used
The construction method for each pouch begins with a single side panel worked flat, following the direction indicated by the chart arrow. Stitches are cast on, and the fabric grows through a series of cast-on and bind-off sections at each end to shape the cross-like flat piece that, once seamed, forms the three-dimensional pouch body. This approach is a clever flat-knitting construction technique that avoids complex shaping while producing a neat, structured result.
- Flat knitting: Each side panel is worked back and forth in rows, beginning with a wrong-side row
- Shaping by casting on and binding off: Additional stitches are cast on at each end mid-work to extend the panel, then bound off to return to the original stitch count, creating the characteristic cross-shaped flat piece
- Seaming: Four seams are closed after blocking to assemble the pouch body, as indicated by broken lines in the line chart included in the pattern
- Picking up stitches: Stitches are picked up around the top opening using a circular needle to work the cuff
- Cuff finishing: A ribbed cuff is worked in the round and then turned out for a neat, folded edge
- Blocking: The finished flat piece is blocked to measurements, covered with a damp cloth, and allowed to dry before seaming — an important step for achieving the correct dimensions
- Double yarn technique: Throughout the entire pattern, the yarn is held double, meaning two strands are used together at all times, giving the fabric extra body, structure, and durability
Stitches Used
The pattern uses two simple, foundational knitting stitches, making it very accessible for beginners:
- Stockinette stitch (St st): The main body of each pouch is worked in stockinette stitch — knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows — creating a smooth, classic fabric
- Rib pattern (K1, P1): The cuff at the top of each pouch is worked in a simple one-by-one rib, alternating one knit stitch and one purl stitch. This creates a stretchy, textured band that folds neatly when turned out
Materials Required
The pattern calls for REGIA 4-ply yarn in 50 g balls, a smooth, hardwearing yarn well suited to structured accessories. Three specific colourways are used across the three pouches:
- Col 01992 (natur) – 2 balls for the small pouch
