Product Description

Here is a beautiful and easy to stitch square to add to all your sampler afghans.

I named this square after Gretchen, aka Chitweed on Ravelry, who combines colors in a masterful manner and there is plenty of opportunity to combine many colors in this design.

9" Version and 12" Version are both included in the pattern download.

Please see all my designs and join me on my Facebook page - Julie Yeager Designs for pattern support.

Sample is shown in Vanna's Choice in shades Pea Green, Dusty Purple, Rust, Taupe and Eggplant. Also recommend Stylecraft Special Aran.

Gretchen Afghan Square by Julie Yeager

Project Overview

The Gretchen Afghan Square is an advanced crochet design created by Julie Yeager that produces a 12-inch finished square (or a 9-inch version if worked through Round 9 only). This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for crafters looking to create coordinated afghan blocks that can be joined together for larger projects, or worked individually as decorative squares.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a single crochet afghan square with a structured, dimensional design. The square features multiple rounds of increasing complexity, building from a simple center ring outward. The finished piece measures 12 inches square when all rounds are completed, making it a versatile component for blankets, throws, or other crochet projects. The pattern accommodates different skill preferences by allowing crafters to stop at Round 9 for a smaller 9-inch version.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Gretchen Afghan Square employs several intermediate to advanced crochet techniques that build upon fundamental skills. The pattern utilizes back loop only construction in specific rounds to create textural variation. Ring construction begins the square, establishing a centered starting point. The pattern incorporates slip stitch joining to connect rounds seamlessly and color changes across multiple rounds to create visual interest and pattern definition.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

This pattern uses a comprehensive range of crochet stitches, progressing from basic to more complex:

  • Single crochet (sc) – the foundational short stitch
  • Half double crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch used in early rounds
  • Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch throughout much of the pattern
  • Treble crochet (tr) – a taller stitch for increased height and drape
  • Double treble crochet (dtr) – an advanced tall stitch created by yarning over three times before inserting the hook, then completing the stitch by pulling yarn through two loops four times consecutively
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
  • Chain stitch (ch) – fundamental for spacing and turning
  • Shell stitch – a decorative element consisting of five double crochets worked into a single stitch, creating a fan or shell-like appearance

The pattern also employs chain-space counting conventions where a chain-2 at the beginning of a round functions as a half double crochet, chain-3 counts as a double crochet, and chain-4 counts as a treble crochet. This technique is essential for maintaining proper stitch height and pattern symmetry throughout the square.

Materials and Yarn

The Gretchen Afghan Square pattern is designed to work with Vanna's Choice yarn in five coordinated colors: Pea Green (A), Dusty Purple (B), Rust (C), Taupe (D), and Eggplant (E). These colors create a sophisticated, multi-tonal palette suitable for traditional or contemporary home décor. The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights including DK weight, Worsted weight, and Aran weight, providing flexibility for crafters with different yarn preferences and stash options.

Hook Size and Tools

The recommended crochet hook size is Size J (6.0 mm), which pairs appropriately with the suggested yarn weights to create a fabric with good stitch definition and appropriate drape for an afghan square. The pattern uses American crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with standard American abbreviations and techniques.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an advanced pattern, the Gretchen Afghan Square is best suited for experienced crocheters. The advanced classification reflects the use of multiple stitch types including double treble crochet, the requirement to manage color changes across rounds, and the precision needed for back-loop-only construction. While individual stitches are standard, the combination and execution require solid foundational skills and pattern-reading ability.

Pattern Format

This pattern is provided as a free, downloadable PDF, making it immediately accessible for digital viewing, printing, or reference on devices while crafting. The PDF format allows crafters to zoom in on detailed instructions and abbreviation lists as needed during the project.
