Greer Hat Knitting Pattern in Schachenmayr Boston – Free Downloadable PDF

The Greer Hat is a bold, colorwork knitted beanie designed to fit a head circumference of approximately 20 inches (51 cm) and measuring around 9 inches (23 cm) tall. This free downloadable PDF pattern is published by Schachenmayr and is knitted using their Schachenmayr original Boston chunky weight yarn in a striking combination of three neon shades. It is an excellent project for knitters who want to explore stranded colorwork in the round while working with a satisfyingly thick yarn that knits up quickly.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a knitted hat worked entirely in the round, featuring a ribbed brim, a section of smooth stockinette, a vibrant Fair Isle colorwork panel, and a neatly decreased crown. The three-color neon palette — Neon Orange (#00122), Neon Green (#00171), and Neon Yellow (#00121) — gives the hat a vivid, eye-catching appearance that makes it ideal for winter visibility as well as fashion-forward accessorizing.

Techniques Used

  • Knitting in the round – The hat is worked seamlessly from the cast-on edge to the crown using circular needles and then double-pointed needles as the stitch count decreases.
  • Fair Isle / Stranded Colorwork – A 30-round colorwork chart is worked using all three neon colors, creating a repeating jacquard pattern across the body of the hat. Knitters carry unused yarn strands across the back of the work, a hallmark of traditional Fair Isle technique.
  • 2x2 Ribbing – The brim is worked in a 2/2 rib pattern (alternating 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches) for approximately 5 cm (2 inches), providing a stretchy, snug fit around the head.
  • Crown Decreases – Once the colorwork section is complete, stitches are decreased evenly over two rounds by knitting 2 stitches together, reducing the stitch count down to 21 stitches before the remaining stitches are drawn together and the yarn is fastened off.
  • Finishing – All yarn ends are woven in on the inside of the hat using a tapestry needle, leaving a clean, professional finish.

Stitches Used

  • 2x2 Rib (Rippenmuster 2/2) – Alternating 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches across a repeat of 14 stitches, used for the brim section.
  • Stockinette in the Round (Glatt rechts) – All stitches are knitted on every round, producing a smooth, flat fabric. Used for the transition round and as the base fabric within the colorwork section.
  • Fair Isle / Jacquard Pattern – Worked from a printed chart over 30 rounds, using right-side (knit) stitches in each of the three neon colors according to the chart key.
  • K2tog (Knit 2 Together) – The standard right-leaning decrease used during crown shaping to evenly reduce the stitch count.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Schachenmayr original Boston (chunky weight), one 50g ball each in Neon Orange #00122, Neon Green #00171, and Neon Yellow #00121. A total of three balls are required.
  • Circular Needle: One US 10 (6 mm) circular needle, 16 inches (40 cm) in length — the pattern references Milward brand needles in the original German instructions.
  • Double-Pointed Needles (DPNs): A set of 4 or 5 US 10 (6 mm) double-pointed needles for working the crown decreases once the stitch count becomes too small for the circular needle.
  • Notions: A
