Product Description
This is a square shaped cushion with a finished size of 40cm square. It is worked in two pieces. The back of the cushion is made first by crocheting 16 small granny squares which are then joined together using double crochet. The front of the cushion is crocheted in one piece, changing the yarn colour at the start of each round. The back and front pieces are then joined together with two rounds of double crochet to create an edging.
Instructions for this crochet cushion are provided in written format only.
This cushion has been crocheted using three shades of New Lanark Aran Yarn.
This Granny Square Cushion was crocheted using Aran weight yarn. The cushion crochets very quickly with this weight of yarn. The back of the cushion is 16 granny squares, which were crocheted separately and then joined together. The front of the cushion is one big granny square, with a change in yarn colour at the start of each round.

What is Being Made
This is a crocheted cushion cover designed to fit a 40cm square cushion pad. The design features a striking two-sided construction: the front showcases a single large granny square with multicolored striping created by changing yarn colors at the start of each round, while the back consists of 16 smaller granny squares crocheted individually and then joined together. The cushion is secured with a button band featuring three large buttons.
Craft and Techniques
This project is created using the crochet technique, making it an ideal choice for beginners. The use of Aran weight yarn allows the cushion to crochet very quickly compared to lighter yarn weights, reducing overall project completion time. The modular construction method—where the back is made from 16 separate squares that are joined together—provides flexibility and makes the project more manageable. The front square employs a color-changing technique where new yarn colors are introduced at the beginning of each round, creating a gradient or striped effect without the need for complex color work within rounds.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern used throughout this cushion is the granny stitch, a classic and fundamental crochet pattern. This stitch is beginner-friendly and creates the characteristic open, lacy squares that are iconic in crochet design. The granny stitch pattern is worked in rounds to build the square shapes from the center outward.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: New Lanark Aran weight yarn in three colors—Verona (247m/270yds), Blossom (118m/129yds), and Pebble (127m/139yds)
- Crochet Hook: 4.5mm crochet hook
- Notions: Three large buttons for the button band closure and eight stitch markers for tracking pattern rounds
- Cushion Pad: 40cm square cushion pad (not included in pattern)
Finished Size and Customization
The completed cushion cover measures 40cm square, fitting standard square cushion pads of this size. The pattern includes guidance for resizing: the finished dimensions can be easily adjusted by adding or reducing the number of granny squares used in the back panel, making this design adaptable to different cushion pad sizes.
Tension and Gauge
Working four rounds of the granny stitch pattern using a 4.5mm crochet hook produces squares measuring 10cm. Achieving proper tension is important for ensuring the cushion cover fits correctly over the cushion pad.
