Granny Snowflake Crochet Decoration by Aletta Boleyn

What Is Being Made

The Granny Snowflake is a beginner-friendly crochet decoration designed by Aletta Boleyn. This finished ornament measures 4 inches (10 centimeters) and is created around a metal ring base, making it an ideal handmade embellishment for holiday décor, gift toppers, or festive displays. The snowflake pattern combines classic granny square construction techniques with a circular, symmetrical design that evokes delicate winter snowflakes.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners, including the magic ring method to start the project. The construction progresses through multiple rounds of increasing complexity, building outward from the center. Key techniques include working into chain spaces, creating cluster stitches, and joining rounds with slip stitches to maintain the snowflake's symmetrical structure. The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (CH): Used to create the foundation and spacing between stitch groups
  • Double Crochet (DC): The primary stitch forming the body of the snowflake, worked in clusters to build texture and dimension
  • Slip Stitch (SL ST): Used to join rounds and transition between sections while maintaining a neat appearance
  • Magic Ring: The starting technique that creates a closed center without a visible hole

Materials and Tools

The Granny Snowflake requires minimal materials, making it economical to produce. Yarn: 100% cotton in white, with optional silver glitter yarn for added sparkle and festive appeal. Scrap yarn works perfectly for this small project, reducing waste. Crochet Hook: Size 3.5 mm (US size E) is used throughout the pattern. Additional Materials: A 4-inch (10 centimeter) metal ring serves as the base structure, providing stability and a finished appearance to the completed decoration.

Pattern Structure

The snowflake develops across four rounds of increasing detail. Round 1 establishes the foundation using a magic ring with double crochets separated by chain-2 spaces. Round 2 builds clusters of three double crochets in each space, creating the first layer of the snowflake's points. Round 3 expands the design with larger clusters and increased chain spacing to form distinct snowflake arms. Round 4 continues the expansion with additional double crochets and chain-2 spaces, establishing the final decorative points of the snowflake silhouette.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as beginner-level, making it accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The straightforward stitch combinations, repetitive pattern structure, and small finished size allow beginners to practice fundamental techniques while completing a beautiful, functional decoration. The magic ring start and basic stitch vocabulary make this an excellent learning project.
