Product Description
Granny OXS Square is a variation of the squares Crosses and Noughts. When I designed Crosses and Noughts I had several other similar designs in my head, using a solid granny square in the same way was one of them. So I have produced the full pattern for this.
It was designed for double knit yarn or aran weight yarn but any weight could be used. In double knit weight yarn used in the sample, approx 50g is required and the resultant size is 25cm/10” square. In aran weight yarn using a 5mm hook, the finished size is 30cm/12” square but it is a flexible design where you can add or remove rounds to get the size you want.
Written in UK and US crochet terms, be careful to choose the correct pages.

What Is Being Made
The Granny OXS Square is a modular crochet design that creates a larger square by joining four smaller squares together. This versatile pattern allows crafters to construct a finished square measuring approximately 25cm (10 inches) when worked in DK yarn, or approximately 30cm (12 inches) when worked in aran weight yarn. The design is flexible and can be repeated to achieve custom sizes by working additional border rounds.
Construction Method and Joining Technique
This pattern features an innovative join-as-you-go construction method that eliminates the need for sewing. The four small squares are joined together using slip stitches into spaces on adjacent squares, making assembly quick and seamless. Once all four squares are joined, a border is worked around the perimeter of the combined shape. The border can be repeated for additional rounds to increase the overall dimensions of the finished square.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches and techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. Key techniques include working from a chart for the small squares and executing slip stitches for the join-as-you-go joining method. The border work involves repeatable rounds that allow customization of the final size. Standard crochet abbreviations are used throughout, with both UK and US terminology provided for international crafters.
Yarn and Hook Specifications
- DK Weight Yarn: Recommended with a 4mm crochet hook, producing a square of approximately 25cm (10 inches) using around 50g of yarn total
- Aran Weight Yarn: Recommended with a 5mm crochet hook, producing a square of approximately 30cm (12 inches)
Design Flexibility
The Granny OXS Square works beautifully in a single color or in multiple colors. The sample shown by designer Valerie Bracegirdle demonstrates a two-color version, showcasing how color variation can enhance the visual interest of the finished piece. This flexibility makes the pattern suitable for using up yarn scraps or creating coordinated color combinations.
