If you follow me on Instagram you will know I have a passion for designing crochet blankets. I've had so much love for my sweetheart blanket that I've designed a new version. This blanket retains the heart in the centre, but the colour sequencing is different and the border features linen stitch and double crochet combinations. I've chosen a lovely soft colour palette and I can't wait for you to try it.

The Granny Heart Blanket is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Sue Rawlinson that creates a beautiful 96 cm x 96 cm finished blanket. This downloadable PDF pattern combines the classic appeal of granny square construction with a charming heart motif, making it an ideal project for crocheters with some experience who want to expand their skills with bobble and cluster techniques.
This pattern produces a large square blanket featuring a prominent heart centre measuring 96 centimetres by 96 centimetres. The blanket incorporates traditional granny square construction methods adapted to create a cohesive heart design, with an edging that frames the finished piece. The multi-coloured construction uses seven different DK weight yarn colours to build visual interest and depth throughout the blanket.
The Granny Heart Blanket employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques. The primary construction method uses traditional granny square methodology, which involves working in rounds using chain spaces and clusters to create the characteristic open, lacy appearance. The pattern incorporates bobble stitches as a textural element, adding dimension to the heart centre. Cluster stitches are used throughout the pattern to build the structural elements, worked into chain-1 spaces to create the interconnected sections. Slip stitches are used for joining rounds and transitioning between colours, while chain stitches form the foundational spaces within each round.
The Granny Heart Blanket is worked using DK weight yarn in a total of seven 100-gram balls. The pattern calls for Stylecraft Special DK yarn in the following colours: Colour A (Grape), Colour B (Mushroom), Colour C (Silver), Colour D (White), Colour E (Powder Pink), Colour F (Buttermilk), and Colour G (Duck Egg). The pattern notes that any DK weight yarn can be substituted to achieve a similar effect, providing flexibility for crafters who prefer different yarn brands or have yarn alternatives on hand.
A 4mm crochet hook is used for the main blanket construction and edging. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the project. The pattern notes that tension is not crucial for this particular design, though crocheters who work very loosely may need additional yarn to complete the blanket.
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Granny Heart Blanket is suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with colour changes and following multi-round patterns. The intermediate classification reflects the complexity of the heart centre construction and the bobble stitch elements, rather than the fundamental granny square technique itself, which remains accessible to those with foundational crochet knowledge.
