Product Description
Pattern includes both written directions and charts for cables.
You may need a larger needle size, I knit quite loosely.
This shrug is customizable and has two points in the pattern where it should be tried on or measured to make sure it fits the wearer perfectly. Several A la carte options have been written for the ribbing, to give a totally customized fit. Will work for any adult, from petite to tall plus size.
600-700 yards of yarn in the main color, 100-250 yards for the ribbing, either in the same color or a contrasting color, depending on your preference. Yardage varies depending on the elasticity of the chosen yarn, the rule of thumb is to plan for extra if you are using an especially inelastic yarn (like Alpaca or silk)
Gordian Shrug of Awesome by Elizabeth Witt Trzebiatowski
What is Being Made
The Gordian Shrug is a knitted bolero-style shrug designed by Elizabeth Witt Trzebiatowski for SquidWidget Fidgets. This garment is a fluid, elegant piece that drapes beautifully and can be customized through yarn selection and color choices, including the option to knit the ribbing in a contrasting color for added visual interest.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft. The shrug is constructed using circular knitting needles in multiple sizes to accommodate different sections of the garment, with the body worked flat and the sleeves and ribbing sections utilizing smaller and larger circulars respectively. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should have foundational skills in basic stitches and shaping techniques before beginning this project.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern employs cable stitches as a design element, requiring the use of a cable needle during construction. The garment features ribbing as a finishing element, which provides elasticity and a polished edge. Stitch markers are used throughout the project to track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases, helping knitters maintain accuracy across the multiple sections of the shrug.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn Weight: Worsted or Aran weight yarn
- Yardage Required: Minimum 600 yards of Worsted or Aran weight yarn for the body, plus an additional 150 yards for the ribbing (approximately 750 yards total). The pattern notes that yardage is fluid depending on yarn elasticity; more elastic yarns may require less yardage, while inelastic or stiff yarns may require more.
- Gauge: 4 stitches to the inch and 11 rows per 2 inches
- Needle Sizes: US 7 needles or size needed to obtain gauge, including:
- One 12-inch US 7 circular needle (or double-pointed needles) for sleeve sections
- One 20-inch (or longer) US 7 circular needle (or straight needles) for the back
- One 32-inch (or longer) US 7 circular needle for ribbing
- Additional Tools: Cable needle, 3 stitch markers, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Design Considerations
The Gordian Shrug offers flexibility in yarn selection, allowing knitters to customize the finished garment based on available materials and personal preferences. The option to work the ribbing in a contrasting color provides an opportunity for creative color blocking and personalization. The pattern's intermediate difficulty level makes it suitable for knitters who have progressed beyond basic projects and are ready to work with cable stitches and manage multiple needle sizes.
