Gloria Sweater in Viking Garn Nordlys and Kid Silk – Pattern Summary (UK-2205-5)

The Gloria Sweater is a beautifully feminine, lace-detailed pullover designed by Gerd Auestad and published by Viking of Norway as pattern UK-2205-5. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern produces a classic raglan-yoke sweater with a high neck, worked in a luxurious two-yarn combination that gives the finished garment a soft, halo-like quality. The pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty, making it a rewarding project for knitters who are comfortable with lace, raglan shaping, and working in the round.

What Is Being Made

The Gloria Sweater is a long-sleeved pullover featuring a raglan yoke construction and a high ribbed neckband. It is available in six sizes, ranging from x-small through xx-large, with finished chest measurements spanning 85 cm to 132 cm (approximately 33½ to 52 inches). The whole length ranges from 64 cm to 72 cm, and sleeve length from 46 cm to 49 cm, making it a generously proportioned, wearable garment suitable for a wide range of body types.

Yarns and Materials

The pattern calls for two yarns worked together, which is a hallmark of Viking of Norway's approach to adding texture and warmth without excessive weight:

  • Viking Garn Nordlys – a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 75% superwash wool and 25% nylon, sold in 100 g skeins. The specific colourway used in the sample is Multi cerise/purple no. 957, requiring 3–4 skeins depending on size.
  • Viking Garn Kid Silk – a delicate laceweight yarn made from 77% kid mohair and 23% silk, sold in 25 g skeins. The colourway shown is Cerise no. 363, requiring 5–7 skeins depending on size.

Holding Nordlys and Kid Silk together throughout the project creates a fabric with the structure and stitch definition of the wool-nylon base yarn, softened and haloed by the mohair-silk blend. This combination is popular in Scandinavian knitwear design for its warmth-to-weight ratio and its ability to blur lace motifs into something ethereal and romantic.

Needles

  • 4.5 mm needles – used for the high neckband ribbing and finishing details
  • 5 mm needles – used for the main body of the sweater

Circular needles are implied by the in-the-round construction of the body and yoke, with the pattern referencing rounds (rnds) throughout. A stitch holder is also required for the front neckline shaping.

Construction Method

The Gloria Sweater is constructed using a seamless raglan yoke method, worked primarily in the round. The raglan shaping is a defining structural feature: decreases are worked at four raglan join points simultaneously, with 8 stitches decreased per decrease round. The frequency of decrease rounds is graduated by size, beginning with intervals of 3 rounds between decreases for smaller sizes and moving to every-other-round decreases as the yoke progresses, for a total of 14 to 24 raglan decrease rounds depending on size.

Once the front neckline shaping begins, the work transitions from circular to flat (back-and-forth) knitting. The centre front stitches are placed on a stitch holder, and stitches are cast off at the beginning of each row to shape the neckline while raglan decreases continue simultaneously on the back piece.

Techniques Used

  • Raglan yoke shaping – simultaneous decreases at four points to shape the yoke smoothly from body to neck
  • Working in the round – circular knitting
