Product Description
This easy-to-hook blanket inspired by the ikat dyeing and weaving traditions in Central and Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and Latin America is sure to impress! A self-striping yarn and a contrast yarn are both carried throughout the whole blanket, making color changes easy.
You can make a wider blanket by adding 54 stitches (1 pattern repeat) or 108 stitches (2 pattern repeats) to the foundation row. Shown here across a king size bed.
Light, dk, or light worsted weight yarn (light, category 3).
You will need 2,360 yards (2,158 meters) of main color yarn (MC), the self-striping yarn in the sample.
You will need 2,154 yards (1,970 meters) of contrast color yarn (CC), the solid white yarn in the sample. This includes the yarn needed for the border and tassels.
The sample blanket used 4 cakes of Lion Brand Mandala yarn in Warlock (color 215) (100% acrylic; 590 yards (540 m) per 150-gram cake) and 2 balls of Bernat Baby Sport yarn in White (100% acrylic; 1,077 yards (984 m) per 300-gram ball).
Globe Trekker Throw Crochet Pattern by Susan Kennedy
Project Overview
The Globe Trekker Throw is an intermediate-level crochet blanket designed by Susan Kennedy of Pretty Peaceful. This throw blanket draws inspiration from traditional ikat dyeing and weaving techniques found across Central and Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and Latin America. The finished blanket measures 54 inches (137 cm) wide by 75 inches (191 cm) long, making it an appropriately sized throw for draping across a king-size bed or using as a decorative blanket.
Design Features and Customization
The Globe Trekker Throw employs a two-yarn color technique that simplifies the crochet process. Both a self-striping yarn and a contrast yarn are carried throughout the entire blanket, eliminating the need for complex color changes and making the pattern accessible to intermediate crocheters. The blanket's width can be easily customized by adding additional pattern repeats to the foundation row—adding 54 stitches creates one additional pattern repeat, while adding 108 stitches creates two pattern repeats, allowing crafters to adjust the blanket size to their preferences.
Yarn Requirements
This project uses light, DK, or light worsted weight yarn (category 3 weight). The pattern calls for:
- Main Color (MC): 2,360 yards (2,158 meters) of self-striping yarn
- Contrast Color (CC): 2,154 yards (1,970 meters) of solid color yarn, such as white
The combination of a self-striping yarn with a solid contrast color creates visual interest while keeping the construction straightforward.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Globe Trekker Throw is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern utilizes a repeating stitch pattern worked across multiple rows, with the two-yarn carry method simplifying color transitions throughout the blanket. This technique-driven approach creates the ikat-inspired visual effect while maintaining consistent tension and stitch definition across the large blanket surface.
Tools and Materials
Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for DK and sport weight yarn, along with the specified yardages of main color and contrast color yarn. The downloadable PDF pattern from Susan Kennedy provides complete instructions for constructing this decorative throw blanket.
