Yardage: Main Color (MC): 570 yards (525 m) Contrasting Color (CC): 35 yard (32 m)
Sample shown in Yarn Love Audrey Hepburn, an 85/15 Polwarth/silk blend. The sample used one skein of MC for the body and one skein of MC for the edging, making this appropriate for combining two skeins of different dye lots. Alternatively, a third color could be used: one skein for the body, one skein for the edging, and a small amount of a third skein for the CC stripes.
Skills needed: wrap and turn short rows, slip stitches, basic decreases and yo increases

Glaciology Knit Shawl by Allison Janocha
What Is Being Made
Glaciology is a textured knit shawl designed by Allison Janocha for fall and winter wear. This finished shawl measures 17 inches deep by 70 inches wide (43 cm by 178 cm), making it a generously sized accessory suitable for layering over shoulders or wrapping for warmth. The design combines rustic and elegant qualities through its textured construction and sophisticated colorwork.
Yarn and Materials
This shawl is worked in DK weight yarn, specifically a wool and silk blend that provides both durability and a refined drape. The pattern calls for approximately 570 yards (525 m) of main color (MC) yarn and 35 yards (32 m) of contrast color (CC) yarn. The sample shown uses Yarn Love Audrey Hepburn in an 85% polwarth wool and 15% silk composition, with the main color in Storm and the contrast color in Arabian Nights. The pattern is designed to accommodate different dye lots, allowing crafters to use separate skeins for the body and edging without concern for color matching.
Tools and Notions Required
- US Size 8 (5 mm) circular needles, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Two stitch markers (additional markers optional)
- Steam iron or fabric steamer for steam blocking the finished shawl
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Glaciology employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with strategic stitch manipulation to create its textured appearance. The shawl utilizes a repeating four-row pattern that alternates between knit and purl stitches, creating a ribbed texture. The pattern incorporates slip stitches worked purlwise with yarn in back (wyib), which adds visual interest and helps define the fabric structure without increasing stitch count.
The gauge swatch instructions provide a foundation for understanding the pattern's construction. The swatch begins with a cast-on of 30 stitches and establishes the core stitch pattern through a series of rows:
- Row 1: Alternating purl 2, knit 2 ribbing, ending with purl 2
- Row 2: Alternating knit 2, slip 2 purlwise with yarn in back, ending with knit 2
- Row 3: Alternating knit 2, purl 2 ribbing, ending with knit 2
- Row 4: Alternating slip 2 purlwise with yarn in back, knit 2, ending with purl 2
- Rows 5-41: The four-row pattern repeats nine times to complete the gauge swatch
This repeating pattern creates a balanced, textured fabric that showcases the wool and silk blend while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The use of slip stitches adds depth and visual complexity without requiring advanced colorwork techniques. Steam blocking is recommended to set the stitches and enhance the finished shawl's drape and appearance.
