Product Description
Like a bright summer morning the Girder Shawl is crisp and fresh in a linen and rayon blend yarn. Equal parts romantic and modern this shawl evokes the structures of architecture while being feminine and organic. Perfect for early mornings in an old Victorian Beach house with a fragrant cup of tea.
PATTERN NOTES The shawl is worked in the round from the center out, beginning with a provisional cast-on worked onto 2 circular needles. The first stitch on each needle is marked with a removable marker. Use the free end of one circular needle to work across the stitches on that needle. When you have enough stitches, you may work all of the stitches onto one needle. Once all of the stitches are combined onto one needle, you may continue to use the removable markers to separate the two lace patterns, or you may remove the markers and place a ring marker before each of the marked sts.
Girder Shawl by Meghan Jones
What is Being Made
The Girder Shawl is a knitted shawl designed by Meghan Jones and published by Little NutMeg Productions. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished shawl measuring approximately 62 inches wide by 30 inches long. The design balances romantic and modern aesthetics, drawing inspiration from architectural structures while maintaining a feminine and organic appearance. The shawl is described as crisp and fresh, evoking the feeling of a bright summer morning and is envisioned as an elegant accessory for leisurely moments, such as early mornings in a Victorian beach house.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Girder Shawl is worked in the round from the center outward, a construction method that creates a cohesive, expanding design. The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on worked onto two circular needles using the Turkish method. This technique allows knitters to pick up stitches later in the pattern, enabling the shawl to grow organically from its center point. Working in the round from the center out is a popular technique for creating large, seamless shawls with balanced shaping on all sides.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern used in the Girder Shawl is Lace Pattern #11, which is worked throughout the main body of the shawl. Lace knitting involves yarn-overs and decreases that create openwork sections and delicate, breathable fabric. The pattern includes cable stitches as well, as indicated by the inclusion of a cable needle in the materials list. The combination of lace and cable elements creates visual interest and texture while maintaining the shawl's light, airy quality.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Lace Pattern #11 when blocked. While the pattern notes that gauge is not crucial and may affect yardage requirements, achieving proper gauge ensures the shawl reaches its intended finished dimensions of 62 inches wide by 30 inches long.
Materials and Yarn
The Girder Shawl is designed to be worked in Plymouth Yarn Vivara, a worsted-weight yarn composed of 81% rayon and 19% linen. This fiber blend creates the crisp, fresh quality described in the pattern, as linen provides structure and durability while rayon adds a subtle sheen and drape. The pattern calls for 6 balls of Vivara in the silver colorway, with each ball containing 103 yards and weighing 50 grams. The linen and rayon blend makes this shawl particularly suitable for warm-weather wear.
Needles, Tools, and Notions
The Girder Shawl requires size 8 (5 millimeter) circular needles measuring 32 inches in length, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. Knitters will also need a cable needle for working cable stitches throughout the pattern. Removable stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and construction points as the shawl expands from the center outward.
Difficulty Level
The Girder Shawl is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. Intermediate knitters should be comfortable with reading stitch patterns, working in the round on circular needles, understanding yarn-overs and decreases for lace knitting, and managing cable stitches. The center-out construction and lace pattern work require attention to detail and pattern awareness, but the project remains accessible to knitters ready to expand their skills.
