Gingham Blanket in Deramores Studio DK Acrylic

What is Being Made

This is a 150cm x 150cm knitted blanket featuring a classic gingham pattern. Designed by Sarah Murray, this throw-sized blanket combines two complementary colors in a traditional gingham check design, making it an ideal project for creating a cozy, decorative blanket suitable for sofas, beds, or as a gift.

Techniques Used

The Gingham Blanket employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The primary construction method uses stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a defined right side and reverse side. The pattern incorporates color work through the use of two contrasting yarn colors held and worked in alternating sections to create the gingham check effect. The yarn is held double throughout the project, meaning two strands of yarn are worked together simultaneously to achieve the desired fabric weight and drape.

Stitches Used

This beginner-friendly pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches:

  • Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch that forms the primary fabric structure
  • Purl (P) – used in combination with knit stitches to create the stocking stitch texture and contribute to the gingham pattern definition
  • Repeat (Rep) – pattern rows are repeated to build the blanket's dimensions and establish the gingham check pattern

Materials and Tools

This pattern calls for Deramores Studio DK acrylic yarn, which offers excellent value and workability for larger projects. The yarn requirements are:

  • Yarn A (Cranberry) – 10 x 100g balls
  • Yarn B (Frost) – 7 x 100g balls

The pattern specifies a 6mm circular knitting needle measuring 120cm in length. The circular needle accommodates the large blanket dimensions and allows for comfortable handling of the substantial yardage. When worked with yarn held double, the 6mm needles produce a tension of 11 stitches and 14 rows over 8x8cm in stocking stitch, creating a fabric with good drape and warmth suitable for a blanket application.

Difficulty Level

This is an easy, beginner-friendly knitting project. The straightforward stocking stitch construction combined with simple color blocking makes it accessible to knitters new to blanket-sized projects. The use of acrylic yarn provides forgiving, durable material that is easy to work with and maintain.
