Product Description

Inspired by the motifs on Kali's Cowl, Geoui is a shawl that is worked from point-to-point. Gorgeously lacy and dangerously addicting, the edging is worked as you go, so you can make the most of the yarn you have by working half of your yarn to the increases before decreasing.

This versatile piece can be worn as a shawl: tied in the front or the back, or as a scarf, wrapped around once, or even twice.

I named this shawl Geoui for a few reasons. First, the edging is almost the same as Kali's Cowl. Second, the shawl is almost perfectly symmetrical. Third, Kali is Korean, so I chose a Korean name.

This pattern is fully charted and written out. It is written in US terms.

Geoui Crochet Shawl by Joyce Yu

What Is Being Made

Geoui is an advanced crochet shawl designed by Joyce Yu and inspired by the motifs found on Kali's Cowl. This lacy, triangular shawl measures 76 inches by 20 inches (193 centimeters by 51 centimeters) when finished. The design is worked from point to point, creating a sophisticated geometric construction that showcases intricate lacework throughout.

Construction Method and Techniques

The shawl employs a point-to-point construction technique, which means the piece is built outward from a central point rather than cast on in the traditional manner. One of the most practical features of Geoui is that the edging is worked as you go, eliminating the need for a separate finishing step. This integrated edging approach allows crocheters to maximize their yarn usage by working approximately half of the available yardage through the increase sections before transitioning into the decrease sections. This flexibility makes the pattern adaptable to different yarn quantities, and instructions are provided for adjusting the finished size and yardage accordingly.

The pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms. A helpful tip for success is to chain loosely throughout the work, as this prevents the foundation from becoming too tight and maintains consistent drape in the finished shawl.

Stitches Used

Geoui utilizes fundamental crochet stitches combined in a lace pattern:

  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining and creating seamless transitions
  • Chain (ch) – forms the foundation and creates openwork spaces characteristic of lace
  • Single crochet (sc) – provides structure and definition in pattern sections
  • Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch for building height and creating the lacy fabric
  • Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog) – used during decrease sections to shape the shawl
  • Turning chain (tch) – all turning chains are counted as double crochet stitches in this pattern

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for Shimmer Hand Dyed Lace Yarn, a specialty yarn weight specifically designed for delicate, openwork projects. One skein provides 440 yards (402 meters) and weighs 50 grams, offering ample yardage for the finished shawl dimensions. A Size H crochet hook (5.0 millimeters) is used to work with this lace-weight yarn. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and pins for blocking the finished shawl to shape.

Notably, gauge is not critical for this pattern, making it more forgiving for crocheters at the advanced level who may have slight variations in tension. This flexibility is typical of lace shawl patterns where the final dimensions can accommodate minor adjustments.

Difficulty Level

Geoui is classified as an advanced crochet project. The point-to-point construction, lace pattern complexity, and the integration of increases and decreases throughout the design require solid foundational crochet skills and comfort reading detailed stitch patterns. However, the reward for this technical investment is a beautifully sophisticated, wearable lace shawl with professional finishing.
