Product Description

This shawl is crocheted entirely in slip stitches. The pattern is based on a wonderful feature of crochet: With each stitch, you are free to take your stitches in a new direction. Out of this feature I developed a technique of crocheting with long rows, resembling Peano curves. For those who are not mathematicians: A Peano curve fills an area by twisting and turning fractally. The result for crochet is a shawl with few but very long rows. The lace border enhances the lightness of the shawl.

The pattern includes written instructions and photo tutorials for the stitches, for decreases and for my technique of working in long rows. The stitches used are regular slip stitch (slst), inverse slip stitch (islst), front loop only slip stitch (F), and inverse back loop only slip stitch (iB).

yarn: 40 g each of Nature's Luxury Geisha in Powder Blue, Vivid Lilac and Geisha's Favorite

also needed: 42 stitch markers (or threads in a constrasting color)

The pattern is available in English and German.

Geisha's Finest Crocheted Shawl by Tanja Osswald

What Is Being Made

Geisha's Finest is an advanced-level crocheted shawl designed by Tanja Osswald. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 145 cm x 35 cm (57 inches x 13.5 inches). The shawl is worked in lace-weight yarn and features a sophisticated construction that combines mathematical principles with traditional crochet techniques to produce an elegant, lightweight accessory.

Techniques and Construction Method

This shawl employs a distinctive crochet technique developed by the designer that draws inspiration from Peano curves—mathematical fractals that fill an area through continuous twisting and turning. Rather than using multiple short rows, the pattern is constructed using very long rows that mimic the path of a Peano curve. This innovative approach allows the crocheter to change direction with each stitch, creating a complex geometric structure within a relatively simple framework.

The design demonstrates the fundamental freedom inherent in crochet: the ability to direct stitches in new directions with each row. This feature is leveraged to create visual interest and structural complexity while maintaining a manageable number of total rows. The result is a shawl with impressive dimension and intricate patterning achieved through directional stitch placement rather than stitch variety.

Stitches Used

The entire shawl is crocheted using slip stitches as the primary stitch throughout the main body. A lace border is incorporated along the edges to enhance the overall lightness and delicate appearance of the finished piece. This minimal stitch palette allows the geometric construction method to become the focal point of the design.

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for 120 grams total (4.2 ounces) of lace-weight yarn distributed across three coordinating colors from Nature's Luxury Geisha:

  • 40 g (1.4 oz) Nature's Luxury Geisha in Powder Blue (220 m/240 yards)
  • 40 g (1.4 oz) Nature's Luxury Geisha in Geisha's Favorite (220 m/240 yards)
  • 40 g (1.4 oz) Nature's Luxury Geisha in Vivid Lilac (220 m/240 yards)

A 4 mm crochet hook (US size G) is used throughout the project. The pattern requires 42 stitch markers to track stitches and construction points. The recommended gauge is approximately 24 stitches and 22 rows, though gauge flexibility may be accommodated given the geometric nature of the design.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced and is best suited for experienced crocheters. The innovative long-row Peano curve technique requires strong foundational crochet skills, spatial reasoning, and the ability to follow complex directional instructions. Crocheters should be comfortable working with lace-weight yarn and managing a large number of active stitches across extended rows.
