What Is Being Made

Geòidh is a knitted scarf inspired by the migration patterns of geese during colder weather. The name comes from the Gaelic word for geese. This intermediate-level design features distinctive V-shaped ends and is part of Helen Gipson's collection of bird-inspired cable and lace scarves. The finished scarf measures approximately 6.75 inches wide by 86 inches long after light blocking, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a traditional long scarf.

Design Features and Stitch Techniques

The scarf incorporates several key knitting techniques that work together to create its visual narrative of geese in flight:

• Fagot lace – Overlapping short columns of fagot lace form the central design element, representing skeins of geese flying in formation up the length of the scarf
• Cable stitches – Simple cables frame the lace sections and provide structural interest and texture
• V-shaped construction – The scarf features distinctive V-shaped ends that add visual interest and a refined finishing detail

The combination of cables and lace creates a balanced design where the openwork of the fagot lace contrasts beautifully with the solid texture of the cables. The pattern uses charts to guide the placement and frequency of these stitch patterns throughout the scarf.

Yarn and Materials

Geòidh is designed for DK weight or light worsted weight yarn, also referred to as 8-ply. The sample scarf was knitted using Copley Heriot Tweed, a pure wool DK yarn that provides 109 yards (100 metres) per 50 grammes. This yarn weight choice creates a fabric with good drape while maintaining the definition of the cable and lace stitches. The pattern is suitable for working with aran, DK, or worsted weight yarns, offering options depending on desired finished dimensions and yarn availability.
