Furballs' Simple Eyes 4 Dishcloth by Tomato68Evony

What Is Being Made

Furballs' Simple Eyes 4 is a downloadable knitting pattern for a dishcloth designed by independent designer Tomato68Evony. This intermediate-level project creates a functional kitchen textile measuring 12.5 inches by 7 inches (31.8 cm by 17.8 cm) before blocking. The finished dishcloth features a distinctive design element suggested by its name, incorporating simple eye motifs into the fabric.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to construct the dishcloth. The project begins with Judy's magic cast on, a specialized cast-on method that creates a seamless foundation with just 4 stitches. The pattern incorporates increases to expand the fabric from the initial small stitch count into the full dimensions of the finished piece. Knitters will work in the round using circular or double-pointed needles, requiring familiarity with circular knitting techniques and stitch marker placement to track pattern repeats and construction progress.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes a variety of essential knitting stitches to create texture and shaping:

  • Knit (k) — the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl (p) — used in combination with knit stitches to create the seed stitch texture
  • Seed stitch — the primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit and purl stitches to produce an even, textured surface ideal for dishcloths
  • Knit front and back (kfb) — an increase technique that creates two stitches from one
  • Purl front and back (pfb) — the purl equivalent increase method
  • Knit two together (k2tog) — a right-leaning decrease
  • Knit two together through back loop (k2togtbl) — a left-leaning decrease variation
  • Purl back loop and knit front loop (pbkf) — a specialized stitch manipulation
  • Yarn over (yo) — creates decorative eyelet holes that likely contribute to the "simple eyes" design element

Materials and Tools

Crafters have flexibility in yarn selection for this project. The pattern accommodates worsted weight yarn in two fiber options: non-mercerized 100% cotton or acrylic. Cotton yarn requires 1.3 ounces (36.3 grams) with yardage of 58.0 yards (53.0 meters), while acrylic requires 0.9 ounces (25.3 grams) and 42.2 yards (38.6 meters). Cotton dishcloths offer superior absorbency and durability for kitchen use, while acrylic provides an economical, easy-care alternative.

Knitting needles should be size 3.50 mm (US 4), available in either circular or double-pointed needle format depending on the knitter's preference for in-the-round construction. Additional supplies include two stitch markers (or equivalent alternatives) to track pattern sections, scissors for finishing, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches by 36 rows over 4 inches by 4 inches (10 cm by 10 cm) measured in seed stitch before blocking. This gauge applies consistently to both cotton and acrylic yarn options. The finished dishcloth measures 12.5 inches by 7 inches (31.8 cm by 17.8 cm) before blocking, with the understanding that blocking may adjust final dimensions slightly depending on fiber content and blocking technique.
