Tips and thoughts
An adult size hat measures 6 3/4" across the circle before you stop increasing.
Gauge= why bother? I think hats are sometimes difficult for some people too make. Even if you use the exact yarn and the exact hook size we all crochet a little differently, our tension is different. So yes, too be able to make a successful hat and have it fit, please do a gauge Swatch.

Fun in the Sun Hat by Esther York
Project Overview
The Fun in the Sun Hat is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed to create a lightweight, casual hat perfect for warm weather wear. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Esther York provides instructions for crafting an adult-sized hat with a finished diameter of 6 3/4" across the crown before the increase rounds conclude.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a simple, structured crochet hat suitable for everyday summer wear. The hat is worked from the crown downward using a circular construction method, making it an ideal project for crocheters learning to work in the round.
Crochet Techniques Used
- Magic Circle: The pattern begins with a magic circle foundation, a popular technique for starting projects worked in the round without a visible center hole
- Circular Increases: Strategic stitch increases are worked evenly around each round to create the crown shaping
- Crocheting Over Yarn Tails: The pattern incorporates the yarn tail into the stitches as you work, eliminating the need for weaving in ends later
- Slip Stitch Joining: Rounds are joined using slip stitches to create seamless transitions between rows
Stitches Required
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): The primary stitch used throughout the entire hat construction
- Chain Stitch (CH): Used for turning chains between rounds
- Slip Stitch: Used to join rounds and finish transitions
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: Approximately half a skein of worsted or aran weight yarn is required. The pattern was tested using CraftSmart Value Yarn in 100% acrylic (354 yards, 7 oz / 324 meters, 198g). However, the designer recommends cotton or cotton blend yarns for optimal results in a sun hat, as these natural fibers provide superior breathability and comfort in warm weather. The acrylic yarn used in the sample was chosen to utilize stash yarn.
Yarn Care: The acrylic yarn used can be machine washed on a gentle cold cycle and tumble dried on low heat, or hand washed for extended garment life.
Hook Size: US H-8 / 5.00 mm crochet hook
Gauge Information
The pattern provides a gauge measurement of 8 rows by 12 half double crochet stitches equaling 4 inches when worked with the specified yarn and hook size on a 5.00 mm hook. The designer emphasizes the importance of completing a gauge swatch before beginning the hat, noting that individual crochet tension varies significantly from crafter to crafter. Even when using identical yarn and hook sizes, tension differences can affect the final fit of the hat, making a gauge swatch an essential step for achieving a successful, properly-fitting finished project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for new crocheters or those expanding their skills in circular construction and basic stitch work.
