Frond Hat and Mitten Set by Natalie Servant

Project Overview

The Frond Hat and Mitten Set is a knitted accessory collection designed by Natalie Servant. This downloadable PDF pattern features a stranded knitting technique with a repeating leafy motif, offering versatility in finished style and fit.

Frond Hat Details

The Frond Hat is a stranded knit hat available in two distinct silhouettes to suit different preferences. Knitters can choose between a slouchy hat with a brim circumference of 18.5 inches and a depth of 10.5 inches, or a close-fitting beanie with the same 18.5-inch brim circumference but a shorter 8.5-inch depth. The pattern demonstrates the versatility of the same stitch pattern across different garment proportions.

Stranded Knitting Technique

Stranded knitting is a colorwork method where two colors of yarn are carried across the back of the work, creating a reversible fabric with a distinctive patterned appearance on the front. The Frond Hat employs this technique to showcase a repeating leafy motif throughout the design. This method requires careful tension management to ensure even stitches and prevent loose floats on the reverse side.

Stitches and Construction

The hat begins with a ribbed cuff worked in knit through the back loop (ktbl) and purl (p1) ribbing for 16 rounds, which creates a snug, elastic edge that helps the hat stay in place. Following the ribbed foundation, the main body transitions into stranded stockinette stitch, where the leafy motif is worked using two colors of yarn. The gauge for this pattern is 36 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches in stranded stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Frond Hat requires approximately 400 yards (366 meters) of fingering weight yarn, divided equally between two colors—less than 50 grams in each color. The pattern provides specific yarn examples from the designer's samples: the red and black slouchy version was knit with Lang Yarns Jawoll Superwash Solids (75% Wool, 18% Nylon, 7% Acrylic, 230 yards per 50-gram skein), while the brown and grey beanie sample used Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply (100% merino, 400 yards per 100-gram skein). Both examples demonstrate that quality fingering weight yarns with good stitch definition work well for this stranded pattern.

Needles and Tools

This intermediate-level pattern is worked on US 1.5/2.5mm needles, which are sized to achieve the specified gauge with fingering weight yarn. Knitters may use circular needles for the entire project or combine circular needles with double-pointed needles (dpns) when transitioning to the crown decreases. A darning needle is required for weaving in the numerous yarn ends created by the two-color stranded technique.

Skill Level

The Frond Hat and Mitten Set is classified as an intermediate project, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore colorwork techniques. Stranded knitting requires attention to tension and color management, but the straightforward stitch pattern and clear construction make it an accessible introduction to this popular technique.

Pattern Format

This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing knitters to access the complete instructions, gauge information, and construction details immediately upon purchase. The format includes all necessary information for both the slouchy and beanie versions in a single, convenient document.
