Product Description
Supplies *sport yarn for the head, neck mouth and small flowers and 1.9mm hook *DK yarn for the roses and the hair – still same hook (1.9mm) *colorful wooden beads (3 for the necklace and 2 for the earrings – don’t have to be the same) *small piece of embroidery floss for the monobrow * sewing and tapestry needle and sewing thread * Felt piece for the back cover + metal brooch pin
Notes: for this particular brooch I used less than 15 grams of yarn, so leftover yarn is especially good for this kind of project for the flowers and hair – even head. I didn’t change the hook for the DK yarn (I usually use my 3.00 mm one) because I was aiming at neater and tighter stitches.
Creative ideas: The brooch can be attached not only on jackets and coats, but also on bags and hats. Instead of adding a pin at the back, glue a rope or a ribbon and you instantly have a gorgeous wall hanging. Use it as applique to put on pillows and blankets!
Frida Kahlo Inspired Brooch by Maya Kuzman
What Is Being Made
This is a crocheted brooch inspired by the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, designed by independent designer Maya Kuzman. The brooch celebrates Frida's revolutionary spirit and artistic legacy, featuring her distinctive facial features including her characteristic monobrow. The finished piece is wearable jewelry that combines crochet elements with beaded accents and is backed with felt and a metal brooch pin for secure fastening to clothing.
Design Inspiration and Concept
The designer created this brooch as a tribute to Frida Kahlo as a symbol of resilience and artistic passion. The piece honors a woman who transformed personal struggle into creative power and refused to let physical limitations define her spirit. This brooch is intended to inspire wearers to embody Frida's fearless approach to self-expression and her celebration of heritage and identity.
Crochet Techniques Used
The brooch employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for an intermediate skill level. Construction involves working in rounds and rows to build three-dimensional forms for the head, facial features, and decorative floral elements. The pattern utilizes increases and decreases to shape the brooch components, with single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) used for shaping and decreasing. Chain spaces are incorporated into the design, likely for creating openings where beads will be inserted or attached.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – foundation stitch for starting sections
- Chain space (ch-space) – creates openings within the fabric
- Slip stitch (sl st) – joins rounds and secures stitches
- Single crochet (sc) – primary fabric-building stitch for dense, structured pieces
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – decreases stitches for shaping
- Double crochet (dc) – creates taller stitches for varied texture
- Half double crochet (hdc) – medium-height stitch for transitional areas
Yarn and Materials
The brooch uses two different yarn weights to achieve varied proportions and details. Sport weight yarn is worked with a 1.9mm crochet hook for the head, neck, mouth, and small decorative flowers, allowing for fine, delicate features. DK weight yarn is worked with a 3mm crochet hook for the hair, creating a slightly bolder texture that frames the face. These yarn weight combinations enable the designer to create realistic proportions and dimensional detail.
Additional materials include colorful wooden beads—three beads for a necklace accent and two beads for earrings—which add dimensional embellishment and visual interest. A small piece of embroidery floss is used to create Frida's signature monobrow, adding fine detail work. The brooch is finished with a felt backing piece and a metal brooch pin, making it functional and secure for wearing.
Construction and Assembly
The pattern involves crocheting multiple components separately before assembling them. The head, facial features, hair, and small flowers are each worked as individual crochet pieces. Beads are incorporated into the design, either crocheted directly into the fabric or attached afterward. The monobrow detail is added using embroidery floss and a sewing needle for fine, precise placement. Once all crocheted elements are complete, they are sewn together using sewing thread and a tapestry needle. The finished brooch is then backed with a felt piece and secured with a metal brooch pin, creating a professional, wearable accessory.
Skill Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with multiple yarn weights, managing color changes, and assembling multiple crocheted components into a finished piece. The combination of fine detail work, shaping techniques, and finishing skills required positions this as an engaging project for developing crocheters.
