Product Description
I designed this tiny cardi for Freya.
This pattern has been revised, updated and simplified. The look of the tiny cardi has not changed! The neckline has been narrowed for a better fit.
I specialize in one piece knitting with minimal seaming.
This tiny cardi is designed to be knit flat, in one piece. The borders are garter stitch.
Four sizes available, six months to four years!
Actual chest measurements: 18ins/46cms, 20ins/51cms, 22ins/56cms, 24ins/61cms.
There are turns in this pattern but no wraps, as the peplum is knit in moss stitch and doesn't need it.
This tiny cardi would look great at a wedding on a little tot!
Or, knit it in bright contrasting fun colours!!!!!

Freya's Tiny Cardi by JaneTerzzaDesigns
What Is Being Made
Freya's Tiny Cardi is a knitted cardigan for babies and toddlers, available in four sizes ranging from 6 months to 3-4 years old. This updated pattern features a classic cardigan construction with a button-front closure, designed specifically for the youngest knitters' recipients. Chest measurements range from 20 inches (51 centimeters) to 26 inches (66 centimeters), with corresponding sleeve and body length adjustments for each size.
Construction and Knitting Techniques
This cardigan is knit flat in one piece, a signature approach by designer JaneTerzzaDesigns that minimizes seaming and simplifies the finishing process. The pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to create its structure and visual interest:
- Wrap and turn (w&t) shaping for tailored fit and sleeve cap construction
- Slip stitch edging on every row, particularly emphasized along the neck edge for a polished, finished appearance
- Stocking stitch borders that frame the cardigan's openings and edges
- Contrast triangle details that add decorative visual elements to the design
- Contrast cuffs at the wrists for color blocking or textural interest
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques appropriate for intermediate-level knitters:
- Knit (k) – the primary stitch forming the fabric
- Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches
- Knit into front and back (kfb) – for increases
- Knit two stitches together (k2tog) – for decreases
- Slip one stitch (sl1) – used throughout for edge definition, especially critical along the neckline
- Wrap and turn (w&t) – for short-row shaping
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This cardigan is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight but durable choice ideal for baby garments. Yarn requirements are consistent across the first three sizes at 200 grams, increasing to 250 grams for the largest 3-4 year size. Additional contrast yarn is required: 5 meters by 16 stitches for the triangle details, and 8-10 meters by 2 stitches (depending on size) for the cuffs.
The pattern calls for 3.25mm needles for ribbing or initial cast-on and 4mm needles for the main fabric. Tension is critical for proper fit: 22 stitches to 4 inches (10 centimeters) and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stocking stitch on the 4mm needles.
Pattern Format and Difficulty
Freya's Tiny Cardi is offered as a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer JaneTerzzaDesigns. The pattern is rated at intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping techniques like wrap and turn and one-piece construction. The emphasis on slip stitch edging throughout, particularly on the neck edge, requires attention to detail and consistent technique.
