Product Description
In Fall 2019 I took a class with Bristol Ivy on "Knitting Outside the Box" and my mind was blown! She took us through a number of exercises to help our creative process and one of these was an exercise using Mad Libs. We each got three words and we were to use these to come up with a knitting concept.
I got ‘stripes,’ ‘cowl’ and ‘goofy’. This cowl design was the result. Thanks Bristol!
Note: Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted yarn is listed as a DK but I it knits like a worsted weight yarn. I used all but a few yards of the 3 skeins of Woolstok in my sample. If you are using Woolstok for the cowl, you may wish to purchase an extra skein.
Skills Required:* Working cables * Working increases and decreases * Working with Charts or Written instructions * Blocking

Foxy Stripes Cowl by Janelle Martin
What is Being Made
The Foxy Stripes Cowl is a knitted cowl designed by Janelle Martin, a downloadable PDF pattern for knitters. This cowl measures 9.5 inches (24 cm) wide by 60.5 inches (153.5 cm) long when blocked, making it a generous neckwear piece suitable for wrapping around the neck multiple times or draping loosely for added warmth and style.
Design Inspiration and Concept
This design emerged from a creative exercise taught by Bristol Ivy in her "Knitting Outside the Box" class in Fall 2019. The pattern was developed using a Mad Libs-style creative prompt, where the designer received three words—stripes, cowl, and goofy—and crafted a knitting concept incorporating these elements. The result is a playful, striped cowl that demonstrates innovative thinking in garment design.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Foxy Stripes Cowl employs charted colorwork knitting as its primary technique, with stripes formed through the use of Chart B, which establishes the pattern repeat and stitch structure. The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, a common method for creating seamless tubular garments. The pattern incorporates cable details as additional design elements, adding textural interest to the striped fabric.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern requires 410 yards (375 meters) of merino wool worsted weight yarn that achieves a gauge of 7 to 7.5 stitches per inch. The designer used Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted for the original sample, utilizing nearly all yardage from 3 skeins. Knitters are advised to purchase extra yardage if using this specific yarn to ensure sufficient material to complete the cowl.
Additional materials include US #8 (5 mm) circular needles or the size required to obtain proper gauge, 3 buttons measuring 1 3/8 inches (35 mm), and a cable needle for working cable stitches.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 19.5 stitches and 21 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) measured over Chart B after blocking. Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the finished dimensions of the cowl. Blocking is recommended to set the stitches and ensure accurate sizing.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic stockinette stitch. The combination of charted colorwork, cable work, and circular needle techniques requires familiarity with these intermediate-level skills.
Yarn Weight Options
The pattern accommodates both DK weight and worsted weight yarns, offering flexibility for knitters who may have different yarn preferences or stash options. The yardage and gauge specifications provided are based on worsted weight yarn, though DK weight variations may be possible with appropriate adjustments.
