This is a knitted tea cosy designed to fit a 2.5 pint teapot. The Fox tea cosy is an original design by independent designer Alison Davis, featuring a sleeping fox in a flower stitch meadow motif. The finished piece provides insulation for keeping tea warm while adding a decorative, nature-inspired element to the table.

Craft and Technique

The Fox tea cosy is created using the knitting craft, classified as an intermediate difficulty project. The design employs a two-strand technique for the main body, where double knitting yarn is worked simultaneously on larger needles to create a thicker, warmer fabric. This approach produces a dense, insulating material ideal for tea cosy construction. Single-strand knitting is used for additional pieces, allowing for finer detail work and varied texture.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including:

• Stocking stitch (SS) as the primary fabric structure
• Knit (K) and purl (P) stitches for basic fabric creation
• Knit two stitches together (K2tog) and purl two stitches together (P2tog) for decreasing
• Knit front and back (KFB) for increasing stitches

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Fox tea cosy requires DK (double knitting) weight yarn in at least two shades to create the fox and meadow design. For the main cosy body, two strands of DK yarn are worked together simultaneously on 4.5mm needles, achieving a tension of 15 stitches and 24 rows over a 10cm square in stocking stitch. This doubled-yarn approach creates the necessary warmth and structure. For all other pattern pieces, including the fox motif and flower stitch details, a single strand of DK yarn is used on 3mm needles, achieving a finer tension of 25 stitches and 34 rows over a 10cm square in stocking stitch. This tension variation allows for precise, detailed colorwork while maintaining compatibility with the main body.
