Product Description
Foxes and hares make a marvelously mismatched pair on these bright Fair Isle socks! Worked in the round from the top down, the socks incorporate short rows into the heel shaping and use simple decreases to shape the toes. Colorful bands of Fair Isle circle the upper sock and instep. A second version of the fox and hare charts are included with only two colors per row, for those who choose to use duplicate stitch to add extra colors after knitting is complete.
This is an intermediate level pattern. Knitters should have experience with stranded knitting technique, long carries, and following color charts. Knitters will also use short rows, basic shaping techniques, and Kitchener Stitch technique.
Fox and the Hare Socks by Bridget Pupillo
What Is Being Made
The Fox and the Hare Socks are a pair of colorful knitted socks featuring a whimsical Fair Isle design showcasing foxes and hares. This downloadable knitting pattern includes instructions for both child and adult sizes, making it a versatile project for knitters of various ages. The socks are worked in the round from the top down, creating a seamless construction that emphasizes the decorative Fair Isle colorwork.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create both structure and visual interest. The socks are worked in the round, which is a fundamental method for sock construction that eliminates the need for seaming. Short rows are incorporated into the heel shaping, a technique that creates a custom fit by adding extra rows in a localized area without increasing stitch count across the entire sock. Simple decreases are used to shape the toe, tapering the sock smoothly to its point. The pattern also offers flexibility through duplicate stitch, an embroidery technique that allows knitters to add extra colors after the knitting is complete, providing an alternative to working with multiple colors during the knitting process itself.
Stitches Used
The Fox and the Hare Socks primarily utilize Fair Isle colorwork, a traditional stranded knitting technique where colorful bands of pattern circle the upper sock and instep. Fair Isle involves carrying yarn colors across the back of the work to create intricate, multi-colored designs. The pattern includes two versions of the fox and hare charts: one with multiple colors per row for traditional Fair Isle knitting, and a simplified version with only two colors per row designed for those who prefer to use duplicate stitch for additional color details. This approach makes the pattern accessible to knitters with varying levels of colorwork experience.
Materials
The Fox and the Hare Socks are designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for Fair Isle patterns while remaining comfortable for sock wear. Knitters will need appropriate needles for working in the round with 4-ply yarn, such as circular needles or double-pointed needles, depending on their preferred method. The pattern's use of 4-ply yarn ensures that the intricate Fair Isle design remains clear and visually striking while maintaining the durability needed for a functional garment.
