Forest Wrap by MunroSisters3

What is Being Made

The Forest Wrap is a knitted shawl designed by Fiona Munro from MunroSisters3. This intermediate-level project creates a rectangular wrap measuring 60 inches (152.5cm) in length and 20 inches (51cm) in width, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering and everyday wear.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs fundamental shawl construction techniques centered around stockinette stitch as the primary fabric. The design incorporates garter stitch borders maintained throughout the piece, which are worked by knitting every row on both the right side and wrong side. The contrast color work is strategically integrated into the pattern, with the first and last 2 stitches of rows worked in garter stitch using the main color to create defined selvage edges. This combination of stitch techniques creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity in the finished wrap.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the body of the wrap, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Garter Stitch: Used for the borders and selvage edges, providing a textured frame and preventing curling at the edges

Materials

Yarn: The Forest Wrap requires 870 meters (954 yards) of main color and 290 meters (318 yards) of contrast color, totaling approximately 1,160 meters of sport weight yarn. The sample was knit using The Fibre Co. Road to China Light, a luxurious blend of 65% alpaca, 15% silk, 10% camel, and 10% cashmere. The sample specifications call for 6 skeins of Pearl Grey (main color) and 2 skeins of Cobalt (contrast color), with each skein weighing 50 grams and yielding 145 meters (159 yards).

Needles and Notions: This project requires 3.5mm needles (US size 4) or the size necessary to obtain proper gauge. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and pins for blocking the finished wrap to measurements.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when worked in stockinette stitch. Obtaining correct gauge is essential for achieving the finished measurements of this wrap.
