Product Description

Forest Trail Crochet Headband

This cosy crochet headband pattern is just perfect for those in-between days when you’re not sure if you’ll need a hat or not. You’ll be able to keep your ears warm out on the trail, but won’t have to risk getting “hat-hair” to achieve it.

I love the texture in this headband that comes from the front post double crochet stitches. (The pattern includes a short photo tutorial on where to position the FPdcs)

ConstructionThis crochet headband is worked from side to side. I love this method for making headbands because you can just keep adding rows until you have reached the circumference that you want. So, you pretty much eliminate any risk of the headband not fitting :-)

Forest Trail Headband Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

The Forest Trail Headband is a crocheted accessory designed to fit multiple head sizes, from toddlers through adults. This downloadable crochet pattern by Sarah Ruane offers four different size options to accommodate various age groups and head circumferences. The finished headband features a 2.5 to 3-inch width and ranges in length from 15.5 inches for toddlers up to 21.5 inches for medium adult sizes.

Available Sizes and Finished Measurements

  • Toddler: 15.5" headband circumference, 18-19" head circumference, 2.5" width, requires less than 1 skein (44 yards / 40 meters)
  • Child: 17.5" headband circumference, 19-20" head circumference, 3" width, requires less than 1 skein (55 yards / 50 meters)
  • Adult Small: 19.5" headband circumference, 21-22" head circumference, 3" width, requires less than 1 skein (64 yards / 59 meters)
  • Adult Medium: 21.5" headband circumference, 23-24" head circumference, 3" width, requires less than 1 skein (71 yards / 65 meters)

Crochet Techniques and Construction

The Forest Trail Headband is constructed using a side-to-side working method, meaning the crocheter works from one side edge to the opposite side edge rather than working in rounds or lengthwise rows. Once the main piece is completed, the two short edges are seamed together to form the finished headband shape. This construction technique creates a seamless appearance when properly joined and allows for even stitch distribution across the width of the piece.

Yarn and Materials Required

This pattern calls for Aran weight yarn (also known as Worsted weight or #4 weight yarn). The designer specifically references Hayfield Bonus Aran with Wool as a suitable yarn choice, which features 840 meters (919 yards) per 400-gram skein with an 80% acrylic blend. The small yardage requirements mean that a single skein of yarn is more than sufficient for any size option in this pattern.

Crochet Hook and Gauge

A 5mm / H-8 crochet hook is recommended to achieve the correct gauge, though crafters should use whichever hook size is necessary to meet the specified gauge of 14 stitches by 14 rows over a 4-inch by 4-inch (10 centimeter by 10 centimeter) swatch worked in the pattern stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished headband fits correctly across the intended head size.

Skill Level

The Forest Trail Headband is rated as a beginner-level crochet project, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or looking for a quick, straightforward pattern. The pattern designer recommends reading through the entire pattern before beginning work to familiarize yourself with the construction method and any special instructions.
