Product Description
The Fogyle Socks were inspired by argyle socks. Who doesn't love argyle socks? But sometimes intarsia is just not in the cards. So I've created a faux argyle pattern along the leg of these socks using knits, purls, and twisted stitches.

What is Being Made
Fogyle Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Laura Rasmussen for creating fitted socks in five different sizes. The pattern produces socks with an approximate foot circumference ranging from 7 inches to 9 inches, accommodating a range of foot sizes from children to adults. This is an advanced-level knitting project suitable for experienced knitters looking to expand their sock-making skills.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Fogyle Socks pattern employs advanced cable knitting techniques as a primary design element. The pattern features sophisticated stitch manipulations including 1/1 right cross (RC) and 1/1 left cross (LC) cable stitches, which create twisted, interlocking stitch patterns throughout the sock. These cable techniques require knitting into the front and back of stitches in specific sequences to achieve the characteristic twisted appearance that defines the Fogyle design.
The socks are constructed using the stockinette stitch as the base fabric, which provides a smooth, classic knit appearance. This foundational stitch is combined with the cable techniques to create visual interest and texture. The pattern also incorporates standard sock construction decreases using knit 2 together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) techniques to shape the sock properly around the foot and leg.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – the primary base stitch providing smooth fabric
- 1/1 right cross (RC) – cable stitch created by knitting into the front of the 2nd stitch on the left needle, then knitting the 1st stitch
- 1/1 left cross (LC) – cable stitch created by knitting into the back of the 2nd stitch on the left needle, then knitting the 1st stitch
- Knit (k) – basic knit stitch
- Purl (p) – basic purl stitch
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – right-leaning decrease
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – left-leaning decrease
- Slip (sl) – slipping stitches as if to purl with yarn in back
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Fogyle Socks pattern is designed for 4-ply weight yarn, which provides the appropriate thickness and stitch definition for sock knitting. The recommended yarn is Trippin' with Dixi Migration, a premium blend consisting of 60% superwash wool, 20% yak fiber, and 20% silk. One 100-gram skein containing 450 yards is sufficient for this project.
If substituting with a different yarn, knitters should plan for yardage between 350 yards for the smallest size (7" foot circumference) and 425 yards for the largest size (9" foot circumference). The yak and silk content in the recommended yarn provides enhanced softness, durability, and a subtle sheen compared to wool-only alternatives.
The pattern calls for US 2/2.75mm double-pointed needles (dpns), or appropriately sized needles for the knitter's preferred sock construction method. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and decreases, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends during finishing.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches and 12 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch, blocked. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit, as even small variations can significantly affect the final circumference. Knitters should knit a gauge swatch, wash and block it according to yarn fiber content, and measure carefully before beginning the project.
