What is Being Made

Foghar is a knitted sock pattern inspired by autumn, with the name meaning "Autumn" in Scottish Gaelic. This design is the fourth pattern in the Four Seasons of Socks Collection and features a decorative leaf motif that progresses from the toe through to the leg. The socks are available in four finished circumference sizes: Small (17.5 cm / 7"), Medium (20 cm / 8"), Large (22.5 cm / 9"), and Extra Large (25 cm / 10"), making them suitable for a range of foot sizes.

Design and Stitch Pattern

Foghar showcases a charming leaf design that evolves throughout the sock. Single leaves work their way from the toe up toward the heel, creating visual interest along the foot. As the pattern progresses up the leg, the leaves double in number with an offset arrangement, adding complexity and visual depth to the upper portion of the sock. The designer describes this as a fun and relaxing knit, making it suitable for intermediate-level knitters who enjoy working with stitch motifs.

Knitting Techniques Used

• Needles: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles measuring 80 cm (32") or longer, or alternatively double-pointed needles (DPNs) in the same size, depending on the knitter's preferred method for working small circumference projects in the round.
• Additional Supplies: Five stitch markers per sock, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and optional sock blockers for finishing and shaping.

Four-ply yarn is a standard weight for sock knitting, offering an ideal balance between durability and fabric drape. The Merino and Nylon blend used in this pattern provides elasticity, moisture-wicking properties, and long-lasting wear. The nylon content adds strength to high-wear areas, making these socks practical for everyday use while maintaining the softness and breathability of Merino wool.
