Product Description

Meaning blossom in Scottish Gaelic, Flùran is a fun and elegant sock pattern featuring a delicate floral lace pattern up the outside of each foot and leg. Knit from the toe up with a gusset and heel flap, these socks are the perfect mix of relaxing knit and engaging pattern. With four widths and flexible length fitting, these are a great pattern for everyone.

The pattern is fully written and the lace is also charted so whichever way you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern, and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos. You will also need to know how to do Judy’s Magic Cast-On and a stretchy bind off like Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.

Flùran Knitted Socks by Liz Corke

What is Being Made

Flùran socks are a pair of knitted socks inspired by Scottish Gaelic, with the name meaning "blossom." These socks celebrate spring with a delicate lace pattern featured on each sock. The design offers four finished size options ranging from Small (17.5 cm / 7" circumference) to Extra Large (25 cm / 10" circumference), making them adaptable for different foot sizes. The socks are designed to be worn with up to 0 to 2.5 cm (0 to 1") of negative ease for a custom fit.

Construction Technique

These socks are constructed using the toe-up method, a popular approach in sock knitting that begins at the toe and progresses toward the cuff. The pattern incorporates a gusset and heel flap construction, which provides structure and durability in high-wear areas. This combination of techniques creates socks that balance both relaxing knit sections with more engaging pattern work, making the project suitable for intermediate-level knitters who have experience with basic sock construction but are ready for decorative elements.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The socks feature a delicate lace pattern worked on each sock, adding visual interest and a spring-appropriate aesthetic. The pattern is worked in the round, requiring knitters to maintain stocking stitch as the base fabric with lace motifs incorporated throughout. The gauge for this project is 32 stitches and 44 rows per 10 cm (4") when worked in stocking stitch in the round, which is typical for sock-weight yarn.

Materials and Tools Required

  • Yarn: 425 meters (465 yards) of Fruitful Fusion Merino Nylon in Washed Coral colorway. This yarn is composed of 75% Wool and 25% Nylon, providing durability and elasticity ideal for socks. The yarn weight is 4-ply, standard for sock knitting, with a yardage of 465 yards per 100g.
  • Needles: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles measuring 80 cm (32") or longer, or alternatively double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the knitter's preferred method for working in the round.
  • Notions: Three stitch markers per sock for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, a cable needle (optional, depending on any cable elements in the lace pattern), and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
  • Optional Finishing: Sock blockers for blocking and shaping the finished socks.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, appropriate for knitters with foundational sock-knitting experience who are comfortable working in the round and ready to incorporate lace patterning into their projects.
